[OTZ80] Do you want a backlit screen?
« on: June 28, 2011, 03:14:24 pm »
Do you want a backlit screen? (This will apply to any screen, whether it's color, grayscale, or B/W.)

Consider the use, power usage, price, etc. when deciding.
Note that there is a hardware switch to turn it on. (Can be controlled by software, if possible/needed.)

Discuss below as needed. If there is a consensus to change this vote in any way, it will be done.

when it can be turned on/off, a backlight is a must, so you don't have to turn the lights on when you suddenly came up with a great idea for a program at night :P
And for power usage: if it's turned off, it would consume just as much power as when it wouldn't have one

Yes, the PRIZM and nspire-CX have it, why shouldn't this one have it?

As long as we can find a suitable screen that we can turn it off from.  If we can't find one like that, then the results of this poll are rather nulled anyway.

I said no (one of the few lol). I guess if we can turn it off it wouldn't be much of a battery hog.

yeah, we would definitely want to save that option in a preference or flag somewhere, and make sure it was disable-able.  I probably wouldn't use it, but voted "yes" considering the option to turn it off.

I think a backlit screen is a must. The Prizm's backlight is very useful.

True.  I'm working on finding some lcd's that would suit our purpose.

I also voted no, but if the backlight can be turned off, I would go for yes. However, I think the n-spire CX uses too much battery power on its backlight, and I really don't enjoy having to charge it every few days.  ;)

If possible, it should be an LED backlight, they use less power than CFL ones, though the light is distributed slightly unevenly,

CFLs are not really the best choice for small screens anyways. LEDs can be fine, esp. if we're dealing with PSP or smaller. Example: I believe the GBA SP uses LEDs, with a really good light spreader.

If you use LEDs, though, it'll be more effective to have them frontlighting, if I remember correctly.

Just saying that because I have seen some calc-sized screens that do use CFLs.

I voted yes, and I think it's worth the price, I've always wanted a calculator I can use when it's dark :)
