The calc is made in Blender and rendered using the new internal pathtracing engine, Cycles.
Then ... some mind blowing with Photoshop for the lighting strokes

the second one is a bit busy looking, but i love the particles along those streaks on the top one =D

did you make the 3d model by hand?

I made a quick 10 minute poster for English. I made a huge glaring error on the left side that I didn't notice until after it was printed D: Also the bottom left, but since it got cut off while printing it wasn't noticeable :D
