More mockups of what would ROL3 look like if one day it ever made it to the 84+ color calc, in case people missed them in the ROL3 map thread:

Of course the 1st one is more of an actual map, though. Hence why it's larger. Sadly, the large screen resolution pretty much leaks the hidden village area to the right, but oh well.

You could make use of double sized pixels? Or just double the resolution of your sprites.
I'm not a nerd but I pretend:

That would work too, although that would kinda defeats the point of an high res calc lol. xLIB already reduces the res to begin with. Else I could just use different sprites for battles, but it would be cool to stay true to the original in some ways. :P

Yeah. I'm working on this. Placeholder pics everywhere, but physics, parallax scrolling and random level generation all basically works.

Looks kinda cool. I would change the brick tiles so that instead of a checkerboard it uses a brown color, though, and maybe make the background  more yellow-ish or beige.

Based on AssemblyBandit's Pac Man clone:

I am unsure if it's possible to have better graphics for the play field while still fitting the entire original maze in one screen, because that pretty much forces you to use 3x3 sprites. 4x4 doesn't work because that would require shrinking down the maze.

Perhaps make it like ms. pacman with a scrolling y-axis and smaller part for the score and stuff.

nah my goal was to remove scrolling entirely while still keeping the original maze intact, something never done before on monochrome Z80 calcs.

It's never done because that makes the game hard to read sometimes. I hope a possible fast grayscale implementation is doable...

I think on the 84+ it might not be too hard to see. The problem would be if the game was done with the built-in Axe grayscale commands, though, or using crappy ASM routines. Flickering would totally ruin such small graphics, which is why routines that does perfect grayscale would be required (resulting in the game not being 83+ compatible).
