Prizm fx-CG50 announced for spring 2017
« on: January 12, 2017, 09:54:31 am »
Announcement: http://www.casio.com/news/detail/casio-raises-bar-for-education-tools-with-new-prizm-graphing-calculator

Seems as if they are basically porting the fx-CP400 3D graphing functionality.
I did not read anything regarding touch, so this is nothing like the HP Prime.

*BUMP*
So apparently this thing came out a while ago and I completely forgot about it. @Deep Toaster and @flyingfisch mentioned that they both purchased one, so I was a bit curious about it. Have either of you (or anyone else) had much hands on time with this thing? What kind of programming capabilities does it have? Looking briefly online it seems to run ~$60, so I was kind of interested in what it was like and what it offered.

Mine hasn't arrived yet, but the things that made me interested were native python support, apparently faster processor, and the fact it's compatible with a lot of old PRIZM addins, or that those addins can be easily fixed and recompiled to work with the fx-CG 50. Also the price point, of course.

Python support is built in? That's pretty cool. I was looking around to see what could be done, I saw C/C++, CASIO BASIC, and python listed. Didn't realize python was an official thing. There doesn't seem to be a ton of information about it around. Programming calculators isn't nearly as cool these days as it used to be apparently. :( Since you say it works with older Prizm add-ins, maybe the old Prizm sdks work for it? Still looking around, I'll probably have to try to look for older info since it was released over a year ago. Also, in some ways, I'm glad it's cheap. In other ways I'm not, because that means it probably wasn't super popular.

Casio has always been niche, though the prizm was/is a relatively popular platform to code on (compared to other casio calculators). Since the prizm sdk still works with the fx-CG 50 I think it should be fine. I'm not sure if the calculator is cheap because it's not popular or because casio has gotten more efficient. My first calc was an fx-9750GII and it was bought for around $50. Casio calculators have always been close to half the price of TI calcs.
