"welcome to the world of computers, where everything seems to be based on random number generators"
@helder: You might want to make the site kind of like a wiki, where users can upload/link to files and add their own descriptions. The ability to rate/comment on programs would be nice too.

There's actually a dl manager for SMF. We even have one installed on Omnimaga: http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=downloads It's at http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=992There are others here, http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?action=search;basic_search=download but I never tried them. Also with SMF, while having a bit less options than Invisionboard and VBulletin, you won't need to pay hundreds of dollars to keep it up to date every year. Another suggestion for a download system is to build it directly into the forums, like on TI-Freakware: http://tifreakware.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=24Omnimaga used to be like Ti-Freakware and it worked pretty well. THe only problem is we used Invisionfree so download counts could not be tracked. SMF, IPB and VBB does, I think, although PhpBB doesn't support attachments by default.
