Should we close the PRIZM hacking section?
« on: May 22, 2011, 10:21:47 pm »
I noticed that pretty much the entire Prizm hacking discussion has moved to Cemetech now. Even people who hardly posts there, like Ashbad or Qwerty.55, now only use the Prizm board there to ask questions and post routines and ignore this one on Omnimaga. I understand projects will be going slowly for a while, since it's finals time, but I mean the development stuff from users who are mostly active here is now being posted on Cemetech and not here anymore. That of course exclude projects, but projects are out of the question with finals going on (and the contest).

Basically this sends the message that people do not want to use the Omnimaga PRIZM hacking board to discuss PRIZM programming anymore.

Now I understand that Omnimaga is where PRIZM hacking started, long before Cemetech, but the same thing happened with TI-Nspire hacking on UTI: People eventually moved the discussion about Ndless here, for some reasons, and eventually UTI merged the Nspire board with calc news. Life just goes on, and maybe people just found that discussing those things were better elsewhere. Now the same is happening here with the Prizm hacking section. People have just chosen to discuss about Prizm hacking elsewhere and I guess it's their choice.

This is why I am wondering if we should just move the topics in here into the other Casio discussion board and simply ditch prizm hacking discussion altogether?

For now most Prizm hacking is done as we now have addins working and gcc running, but there is still much left. This summer I will be focusing mainly on projects and then probably this winter I'll go back to hacking such as trying to install a third party OS. I did vote no as my guess is that there will be more action here within a month, but if that is not then case then we should merge boards.

List of stuff I need to do before September:
1. Finish the Emulator of the Casio Prizm (in active development)
2. Finish the the SH3 asm IDE/assembler/linker program (in active development)
3. Create a partial Java virtual machine  for the Prizm (not started)
4. Create Axe for the Prizm with an Axe legacy mode (in planning phase)
5. Develop a large set of C and asm libraries for the Prizm (some progress)
6. Create an emulator of the 83+ for the Prizm (not started)
7. Create a well polished game that showcases the ability of the Casio Prizm (not started)

Yeah my issue is more that some of the active Prizm coders has pretty much just moved their Prizm activity elsewhere. Fishbot tells me it's due to C being more popular than SH4 ASM there, but we still got some C users too, even if not necessarily for the Prizm, so some stuff might be useful to us too. The projects will pick up again eventually, but at the current rate I was kinda worrying that eventually the entire Prizm discussion would be moving out of Omni, which would make a Prizm-hacking board useless.

Well i'm still working on an Axe like language and a shell,  Qwerty has Java and Lua. If we get all that out this summer then Prizm coding will have a permanent spot on Omni whether or not we have C coders.

[off topic]I talked to my school's vice president today and he was very impressed by the Prizm and troubled by the atrocities that TI has committed.  ;D

Cool to hear. It would definitively be nice to have some Axe-like stuff, because that's our main expertise and favorite style of language. I'm glad to hear about your school president too. It would be nice if more schools switched to the calc.

I don't see a problem in merging the two sections. I mean, we'll still be able to discuss the Prizm like before, it's just going to be in a different section...

Yeah my issue is more that some of the active Prizm coders has pretty much just moved their Prizm activity elsewhere.

I think that is because Cemetech has shifted emphasis to the Prizm while the emphasis here is is still TI even though TI indicates again and again that they don't want our business.  On the other hand  Kerm basically said yeah, ti doesn't want us so screw em.  We have a good alternative in the Prizm so we don't need ti.  That sort of gives the impression that this is the ti site and Cemetech is the Prizm site.  Just my impression.

They're still 80% a 8x coding group working with assembly and BASIC.  However, they have no discussion whatsoever about the NSpire.  They have extremely profession C coders over there (Kerm , Tari, Jonimus, are no short than C geniuses) which is more of forcing us to go over there for help, as they refuse to help us more over here.  However, I plan on helping out over here more as well -- I can't really get help here, but I definately can help others and post routines I make.

I agree that you have a point there Ashbad. Right now I'm one of the only native Omni Prizm C coders (wow that was descriptive :P) But I really don't have time right now to post much on that because this is the end of the school season right now. This summer though I can post more stuff in here, but the issue still remains that my audience is quite limited. I will though answer any Prizm C/C++ questions over here.

and for now, I can help you with that ;)  I've never been the type of guy who sweats over state tests as I usualyl get perfect and all it does is makes my non-good teachers look good, so I have time.

AND, as a start of encouraging people over here to engage in haxing, I set up This thread as a start.  GOGOGOMAKE ROUTINESAND POSTTHERE

Maybe I'll spend some time converting all of the C routines into asm and then running trials to see which one is faster. I doubt GCC will be faster than my routines, but maybe tied. And the reason I use my own asm routines for floating point numbers is because I made a routines that use fixed point floating points which are faster than regular floats.

Well actually we put a lot of emphasis on the Prizm at first, since it started on Omni about 6 months before Cemetech I believe. People just happened to slowly move discussion there. From what two people tell me, it seems to be due to the fact Cemetech focuses on C while Omni focuses on SH4 ASM, and the latter is much harder for the majority of people. Since we do not have many C coders around here, this reduces our Prizm coders userbase considerably. I believe things might pick up again if we post some Prizm C routines here, though, as it might convince some local users to start coding, but I think in the future our activity will mostly be from the new languages being produced, especially the Axe-like one.

I guess I could maybe wait and keep the board for now, but if I noticed we went like weeks with no posts here, I will just merge this section with the other Casio board then move it as sub-forum of the Calc discussions and news, unless the poll suggests otherwise.

I hate posting the same stuff on several forums. Hence, I don't care what Cemetech does.

Well usually you just need to copy/paste so it isn't too much time-consuming, although if you have to post on like 4 forums it can take a long while, especially if one of them takes a long while to load. (United-TI, for example, which takes between 10-20 seconds per page)

That's why a love Omni so much, it's the fastest forums around  :D
And with posting on other forums I only cross post on Cemetech because that is really the only other active Prizm forum now. The only thing I have to change is my excessive use of smilies  ;) :P
