So I just got a C64.
« on: April 26, 2011, 11:43:19 am »
The OS technically is BASIC. I have no floppy/datasette devices yet so I cannot save, but I can save on my other computers and retype the valuable code. This BASIC isn't very basic crap, I said a pun on a serious forum, but it apparently lets you use the 3 SID voices, sprites, and.... Anything the 38911 BASIC bytes can hold, really. Anybody have and sauce source code or ideas.... Or anything relevant to old CPUs? I'm probably getting a 51/4 inch diskette reader sometime.

The BASIC is meant mostly for math -- my dad used it 20 years ago to write rograms for engineers to use so that you could find equations that took hours to do by hand in a matter of a minute or so :)

However, messing around with my dad's C64 in assembly was extremely fun :) here is a good tutorial I used to get started -- the book it advises to buy is actually excellent to learn fast, and plus it's a fun and easy form of assembly: http://www.c64.ch/programming/ ;)

Judging by the array of software available, it looks promising

Nice, I wonder if you could actually a floppy/cassette device to run some games that came out back then, assuming you can find them. Programming stuff on the C64 might be fun too.

I've never really had an opportunity to mess around with one of these, but they were insanely popular during their lifetime. Nice purchase! Maybe I'll mess around with one via emulation someday...

I really need to try some C64 games on emulators at one point. By the way C64 game music was pretty great!

I have a teacher who has one of these. Sometimes during after school clubs he'd show us the Emulator od it on his Ipad. He and his brother have kept theirs in good condition for a long time.

It looked like a very nice system on the emulator at least.
I currently don't do much, but I am a developer for a game you should totally try out called AssaultCube Reloaded download here https://assaultcuber.codeplex.com/

I listen to SID music all the time.
