So it seems like no one really plays it.  Therefore my idea is invalid on this site, it seems.

well it depends what kind of idea it is. If you plan to make a video game about DnD maybe it would interest ppl. The thing is that most users here were not born when DnD type games were at their peak of popularity and those who were were too young to discover about it in hi school

I've never played DnD, but it seems interesting.  Maybe I could even get up to being a level 10 vice-president!

I've played DnD, and I'm here to say that a direct port is near impossible.  My cousin had about 6 books on the rules to Dnd, and he didn't even have them all.  Maps can be greatly varied, created mostly by the DM's imagination.

That being said, you could make a modified version with less choice, less rules, and less freedom :\

Its a very ambition game :)  I'm not really into Rpg stuff in general though, so I'm not the one to be asking about whether or not people would play it or not.

a stripped down version would be the best solution. Else, a port/clone of an video-game version of DnD might do, too.

What exactly is the idea? Were you thinking about a rule helper utility or calculator for such? I've figured such would be relatively useful instead of having to scan through the books each time you needed to look something up.

Also, ideas like that would make great use of Celtic III, as I know teh rules are HUEG.

If you're talking about writing a game based on that, uhm... I'm, like, NOT the person to talk to. Sorta. Maybe? I've already got too many projects on my plate! Leave me alone! *runs away crying uncontrollably*

Uhm... I mean... yeah... We'd need a description. As far as I've read in the topic, I actually haven't seen what the idea in mind is. Just sorta speculation-y stuff.

EDIT: Sorry. I hadn't a clue. Maybe if the forums had a different background for calculator-related material or non-calculator-related material, I might understand. The only indication if you click on the new topics from the front page is the barely visible breadcrumbs thingie at the top. No one EVER checks that. Unless ... maybe... I dunno.

Notice that this this was not  under the calculator section.  It is not something for the calculator...

EDIT: Sorry, that might have seemed a bit harsh.  I've been vauge because, well, I don't know, I don't want to put a udeless idea out there...? Maybe?

did you want to start a campaign on IRC or on the forum?

I haven't played version 4, but 3/3.5 seems to be the basis of some videogames (KOTOR I & II)

OK time to throw the still vauger then in my mind idea out there:
*Whew* here it goes...

Ok, it is a program that you put on your computer.  You start it up, and you connect to a group, either pre-planned, or you can find one, maybe starting in 30 min. etc. and join.  Then once the game starts, an interface pops up that allows you to play an online game of DnD with nifty features, like:
-nice animated dice (everyones is visible to eachother but the DM's)
-tabbed misc. tables for easy, bookless reference
-auto stats calculators, and attack calclators based on rolls and sheets
-sheets are stored on server and can be used by player /computer like normal
Also, built in would be a talk interface, 'cause you obviously have to be able to talk to play.

I have a more definate picture in my mind, but there's the idea.  If someone wants to help me make this DnD Client in vb 2008, I would love to make something like this...

They actually already have a program like this.
It has talking, die rolling, finding parties and such... not sure what else though.
I used it a few years ago.

Still a nice idea to get an updated one or one with more features and such.
I'd help but my VB knowledge only goes to VB6 and I don't even have that anymore.
Not to mention, I have too many projects as it is. (a LOT more than listed in my sig)

vb 2008 express, regular, or professional. it doesn't matter. essentialy they are all the same.
About DnD: It's a fairly easy game to learn, as long as you're not going for DM-ing (which takes a lot more reading and stuff to get)
Love help if you want to.

The basic 3.5 material is all online at http://www.d20srd.org/, though it only offers the parts of the game and rules that aren't covered by the weird license for 3.0/3.5.

I have vb2008, though I am much more fond of C#.  I have no idea how one would go about sending voice data across the internet, and of course how could you do things like mounting a dozen animated repreating crossbows to your dire bear or hiring an army of 1st level comoners armed with flasks of oil and tindertwigs.
I'm like a woot burger with awesome fries

the program would not end up being a visual representation of DnD, it would allow people to connect and play together over the internet, if you see what I mean.
