RulerOS
« on: May 22, 2011, 10:18:44 pm »
I'm going to be making my own OS based off of the linux kernel. I want an OS customized to work best for me and I think it would also work well for others of the community when Its done. What software do you think should be included. I will gladly take community suggestions on how to make it but overall I do want it to be my OS.

I not sure of the name so for now its rulerOS.

My main priorities are:
That it is small and lightweight but still has very powerful tools
Have development tools as a focus but also have things for my other interests like music

How do you plan to make this OS? Seems like quite a bit of work...

I was going to go off of the Linux from Scratch guide and add in customizations where I see that it is needed. I've been reading about this for a while and plan to start actual work on it this summer when I have my plan solidified

I voted Firefox, XChat, Wine, Gnome, TiLP, and Gimp, but if you're planning to make this distro for calc community members, remember there's already OmnimagaOS :)

But there's only so much you need for calc dev, right? I wouldn't mind using it myself. Could you try to build in MIDI support? It's sometimes a pain to install by hand.

Edit: Also don't forget a decent z80-Asm Compiler, and ndless! Also, a lightweight IDE that is pretty configurable is Geany, has command completion,  it's fast, GTK based I think, and has support for anything from Asm to Java and C#.

OmnimagaOS is supposed to be optimized for calc development. And yeah, that would be pretty nice if you start from scratch.

Also you may want a more lightweight DE like LXDE, Gnome and KDE aren't the only choices.

Gnome and KDE were the only ones I could think of off the top of my head. Could someone please explain to me what the differences between all of these is?

Fluxbox is the most lightweight.
