So I'm wondering, what are the strengths of Gnome, KDE, LXDE and others of the like? Which one should I use as my primary?

If you don't have an underpowered system, I'd recommend GNOME or KDE. So as to avoid bias, I won't say which of those two I use. Realize which of those two you'll pick depends on which one "feels" better for you. I've also heard GNOME described as easier for new users, while KDE is more powerful. Both can probably do what you need, though. They're both good.
Edit: That reminds me, I need to install the one of those which I don't have yet...

Eeems, if you ever have issues you can always poke me as well when I'm in the chan, I've been using Arch the longest methinks, and have gotten quite a few printers working with it as well. :P

I LOVE KDE!!! but not as a light desktop I think I'll stick with LXDE for that, and Gnome if I need something a bit nicer....although I think I'll get rid of Gnome sometime....

JonimusPrime, sure I will poke you sometime...probably this weekend. Just to let you know it's a Brother printer on the LAN (through wifi) that I'm trying to use, so hopefully it will be easy.

Also any way I can make the KDE panel look more like win's? like, just show the icons?

good luck in setting everything up Eeems! Don't forget to do a lot of backups too, because I heard horror stories from a lot of people dual-booting with Linux and doing something wrong, screwing up their Windows install x.x

Thanks :)
I'll be careful, although I don't really care about my windows partition except for games.
