Quick semantics poll: Which name sounds better?
« on: July 19, 2010, 12:31:17 am »
Background info: This is one of the bosses (two, actually) that appear in the game. Originally, it was called the more generic "Twin-Serpent." (to reflect that the boss appears in mirrored instances) Later, I decided to revision some of the item, enemy, spell and ability names used. I thought "Archeowyrm" might sound a bit better, and more archaic. This respectively translates to "Ancient Dragon."

Just for the sake of settling a semantic debate I had with someone else over the issue, what are your thoughts? Does "Archeowyrm" seem at all awkward?

I personally like Twin-Serpent, if only because i have to think about how to read and pronounce Archeowyrm.

To me Archeowyrm does seem awkward. It is quite a mouthful, and doesn't really seem to mesh the two words very well in my opinion. Twin-Serpent is more simplistic and to the point.

Archeowyrm looks cool, but it seems to be a bit confusing about if the enemy is really a serpent or not. The Wyrm part reminded me of Wyvern, at first, which is a a dragon. Maybe Twin-Serpent might be better

I got a question. Do you pronounce Archeowyrm like ark-ee-o-worm or arch-ee-o-worm? Or neither?

But personally I kind of like Archeowyrm a bit more because it does sound or archaic to me, but I do have to agree that Twin-Serpent is more accurate (just doesn't sound as cool to me though :P).

I'd imagine like the first pronunciation you posted. Similar to how archeology is pronounced.

Arr-kay-o worm

Closest approximation I can think of. There may be multiple ways to say archaeo-.

Archeowyrm just sounds cooler than Twin-Serpent (which seems more generic, in my opinion), so I voted for it.

Twin-Serpent makes the Author sound like he's just slapping names together for a quick release.  (No offense to whoever likes it.)  Archeowyrm sounds creative and as if the Author put more effort in the Game.

It was pretty much a place-holder, as I added the boss in at a later point. Objectively, I think a lot of the names were kind of quirky at first; so I took some time to revise many of them at one point.

i'd say to go for consistency throughout the game. If lots of other things have cool made-up names, then go with archaeowyrm, otherwise, stick with Twin-Serpent
