Oh, right, although I bet the console version of Steam would support more games than the PC counterpart (or they would release a paid service for the PC), else it would completely defeat the point of the console since most people got a computer nowadays.

But yeah I really hate how online computer games can't be played with console people. Minecraft, CoD, Halo 2 PC (although now Xbox Live v1 is shut down anyway), etc

Well, Portal 2 is pretty much the first console game you can play online with PCs, I bet others will follow soon.

Other than that, there's this OUYA console going out soon IIRC, if Valve makes games on this console that would be pretty interesting and would seriously compete with the 3 other consoles.

I'm loving the Linux attention from Valve, and I'm betting that this has to do with it.

Since Valve is a company that makes money on software, and that's not changing anytime soon, they'll probably release their OS for the thing as Open Source. Sure, there will be SteamBox knockoffs, but they still make Valve money. It's like the IBM PC/Windows fiasco, but the money still goes to IBM. :P I don't see a downside.

Well to be honest, unless you play online, I don't really see the point of buying the same game twice if you own both systems. Online is a different story, though, since some of your friends will own one version and others will own the other version.

I own both Portal 1 and 2 on both Xbox 360 and PC. I guess it might be useless, but if your gaming PC and your Xbox are in different rooms and you're too lazy (or you're unable because your mom is watching TV/is on your computer) to switch between both, that might be useful.

Ah yeah true about that. Although I think in a not so distant future, for those with no issues with parents, I think there will be more and more people using the same screen for both their computer and consoles, along with TV.

Steam specializes in making you not buy the same game twice. The problem with the Xbox is that it doesn't run Steam. AFAICT PS3 games from valve can be registered on Steam, so you can play them on the PC too.

I personally think the Ouya made a mistake by requiring Free to Play. Why can't that be up to the developers?

Personal gripes with F2P

* It means you don't actually own the game.
* It doesn't work unless there's content to buy internally. (RPGs, for example)
* It requires developers to force something they don't want into their games, be it advertisements or in-game money supplies.
* It requires the game to be something to be played consistently, rather than in short spurts. Only the truly addicted will buy anything.
* Free to Play means constantly being annoyed by the ability to spend MORE money on a game. You can never spend too much on a "Free to Play" game.
* Extreme gameplay imbalances are created by those who are willing to spend money.

I'm not saying F2P is a terrible thing, just that it doesn't always work. This means that, IMO, the Ouya is limiting itself to a particular range of games. That's a bad thing. They don't yet know their userbase, so they don't know what kind of games are going to be the most successful.

Now, I'm not saying the Ouya won't succeed. I just won't get one.


Oh, also, the primary motivation for developers like Valve to make their own console is that they can optimize heavily for it. That means that you get more performance for cost, so there's an incentive to buy the console rather than have a massive gaming computer. Cheap computer+console = $800-ish. Expensive computer for gaming > $1000

I don't mind F2P games sometimes, but yeah I hate how to do any decent progress you have to buy stuff like experience booster, and due to being addicting, some people end up with a $5000 bill at the end of the month if they aren't careful. And when the game stops being updated, it dies and then they begin to lose money, so the server closes, with all your progress in it.

Exactly. F2P games really require an ongoing server end to be successful. I don't see any good reason to limit yourself to only that type of game.

I think all the F2P really is, is they must at least have a free demo. How much of the game is in the demo, or what parts are F2P is up to the developer. So say, in my own game I'm planning on releasing, I'll only have the first level or so open as F2P or even a demo level for the purpose of whetting a player's appetite. For the rest of the game, they'll need to purchase it.

You guys seem to be thinking of games like Evony which is completely F2P with in game purchases. This won't be the only kind of game available, actually, there might only be a handful of games like that. Instead, there will more likely be AAA-style games with a 5-10 minute demo or such.

Late last night, Quebec was invaded by a group calling themselves, "Omnimaga". Not much is known about these mysterious people except that they all carried calculators of some kind and they all seemed to converge on one house in particular. Experts estimate that the combined power of their fabled calculators is greater than all the worlds super computers put together. The group seems to be holding out in the home of a certain DJ_O, who the Omnimagians claim to be their founder. Such power has put the world at a standstill with everyone waiting to see what the Omnimagians will do...

Wait... This just in, the Omnimagians have sent the UN a list of demands that must be met or else the world will be "submitted to the wrath of Netham45's Lobster Army". Such demands include >9001 crates of peanuts, sacrificial blue lobsters, and a wide assortment of cherry flavored items. With such computing power stored in the hands of such people, we can only hope these demands are met.

In the wake of these events, we can only ask, Why? Why do these people make these demands, what caused them to gather, and what are their future plans...

You forgot that certain F2P's (DOTA 2 [beta] and TF2) are full games that are not pay-to-win and also are extremely amazing!

You do realize that the F2p condition means they could do something as simple as providing a demo right? It does not have to be integrated into the developer's final product. I myself am actually quite interested in the Ouya. :)
