Juju's Gaming Server
« on: January 25, 2014, 06:50:19 pm »
As you know, I'm taking over backup2 from Alberthrocks, a nice 2GB RAM server, and I intend to put a game server on it, but first I should gauge how many people here are interested.

So I'm asking you, which games are you interested in to massively play multiplayer? Minecraft? Starbound? Garry's Mod? Something else? You decide. Give me your opinions in this thread and I'll decide which one have a consensus or is most popular. Voting ends when Albert hands me the server. Or when consenus is reached and we're ready to install the server, whatever.

You can also discuss about it, general server management or just general random jujufications on IRC on #juju on irc.omnimaga.org.

I vote for an SC Brood War or AOEII server!

SC Brood war would be nice, since we used to have one on Netham's server. Maybe use Omni logo as the banner.

AOEII would be nice too, but Minecraft would probably not be as much of a good idea since there are always many Minecraft servers in the community.

Yeah, I don't really want to start Yet Another Minecraft Server... Otherwise, I don't play much Starcraft, so you'll have to convince me :P AOEII might be a good idea as well and if it don't take up much resources I can run another game besides it. And if a dedicated server exists of course.

So yeah, if there's no way to run a dedicated server on Linux, well, it won't work. After a quick Google search, it's not very conclusive for both SC and AOEII.

I saw a friend play Starbound recently and it looked pretty neat. That'd probably be my suggestion. :)

AOEII and SC Brood war servers require VPN stuffs to set up (and a running copy of the game). You can run both actual games with WINE, IIRC.

Yeah if it involves VPN stuff, since it's on a VPS it's probably gonna be too much trouble. Wine require X to be run, which isn't much of a problem, even on a headless server.

I wouldn't mind Starbound or Garry's Mod (if it was unlisted and Omni only). Also, could a Mumble server go with whatever you choose?

The only issue with Starbound IIRC is that the game is very short. My bro already finished it only a few weeks after purchase.

As for AoeII I have a copy somewhere, but I don't know if the install will work on Windows 7, since it's a very old CD.

It's like Minecraft; you can "finish" it in a short amount of time (a day if you're good in the case of MC), but building and community keep the appeal. (Terraria used to be that way, but they've put in a whole bunch of stuff over time; Starbound may go the same way.)

Yeah, most people are not playing Minecraft to finish the game, but to build stuff. Same for Terraria and Starbound.
