Title: SCII out!
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on July 27, 2010, 03:46:30 pm
Well, Starcraft II is finally out. I lost my pre-order receipt but EB Games asked me my phone number last time so I finally didn't need the receipt.

It's installing right now but I warn people: it appears that if you buy the French version, you can only play on european servers, so Juju or any other quebecer who may lurk, if you want to play with most people here, get the English version. Keep in mind the american version won't let you play on the European server, though. This is the only disappointment I got from the game, so far, when I bought it. I wouldn't be surprised if patches came out eventually on warez sites or if you could install both versions at once, though.

Also game requires 12 GB hard drive space. If it would run on my older machine, it would take about 15% of the entire hard drive x.x

You might be able to find a patcher to set your serverlist to another region. Not sure if any would be available this early on, but I'm sure something will eventually surface. There are plenty for the older Blizzard games.

I was kind of looking forward to the game, but I can't sacrifice that much HD space at the moment. I might be able to barely stretch my resources to get minimum performance, but I don't know if it's worth it.

Thanks to Blizzard doing their best at all their products, the game is top of the news at most game sites.  I was surprised, though, to find that at Gamespot, players gave it only a 9.1 rating

Wut? Only limited to servers from one continent?!? That sux.

BTW, do you think that it will run on a Netbook with the Ion Nvidia chipset?

Oh yes! SC 2 has invaded the world (at last). No more delays :D

I really wish more games would do this. Do you know how most lag happens? People are connecting to server outside of their continent. It's plain fact that if the server is further away, it takes longer to send and receive information (lag) regardless of how fast your internet is. Personally, I'm getting sick and tired of the lag caused just by people saying 'I don't want to play on my continent's server'. Canada/US/Mexico on one server is fine, but I'm tired of the 2-5 sec lag from other continents completely.

However, that is kinda stupid that to get the French version means you're automatically stuck with the European servers. They should probably ask in the installer what continent you're in.

I wonder if this will be as popular as the first Starcraft? So far it looks like it will, providing it runs well on most computers made in the past 2 years, and I played the beta for a while, and they did a nice job. I wish it came out years before, but I guess the wait was finally worth it. A year or two ago I was worried it was heading towards the same direction as Starcraft Ghost.

Hopefully maybe in the future they'll let us do what we did with SC1 in later versions: select a server before connecting. Btw the campaing is pretty cool and as you earn credits, you can upgrade stuff with them. My only hope is that on Battle Net, people will not only play Fastest Possible Map Ever or Zero Clutter like on SC1. That map is fun a few times but after 3 games in a row, it gets kinda boring because there are much less strategies possible to surprise your enemy. (Usually, either your entire team rushes, either you mass a varied group of units (like hyrdas + zerglings) or you drop units near the enemy main building)

I'd be surprised it they didn't eventually add support for people to play on different servers for both versions of the game (seeing how popular it is). I keep seeing commercials for it and every time I do I mistake it for a movie trailer. I may actually end up trying this game (even though I don't usually dig Real time strategy) simply because it looks really impressive.

Although i've never been a fan of RTS myself, parts of the trailer actually gave me the chills O.O

Lol nice :P

Btw, despite SC2 release, some of us may still play Starcraft Original, though. (Expansion set). Going back from SCII beta to SC Brood War when the first beta round closed was a bit rough, graphical-wise and due to my widescreen monitor stretched display, but you get used about it quickly and it's still amazing to play :P

Yeah, SCII is a bit too big for me. I have the disk space; I just don't want to commit 12 GB to a game.
SCI is fun, efficient, and small.

I could be wrong, but I'm willing to bet that most of the disk space is a result of the campaign.  If so, they should have a "multiplayer only" install option if they don't already

I'm not too sure if there is. I didn't notice. It's possible to invite friends to play multiplayer for free during 14 days or 7 hours (whichever comes first) twice, though. My copy of SC came with 2 serial codes for that. They have to download the multiplayer client on the official site to play (which is pretty large, too). That said, I wonder if there's a way to make the game take less space? I know it won't require the CD anymore, like the last 2 or 3 versions of SC1. In SC1, if you want to play without the CD you copy two files on your computer from the CD. The only downside is that it takes an additional 500 or 600 MB of RAM. It would be nice if people with less diskspace could play a limited version of the game or something.

I bet a lot of the space is used by cinematics.

On a side note, the ladder season 2 has just started, so league rankings has reset. You must play a game and it will place you in a league based on your performance, although I don't know how accurate this is. I hope if you're a former diamond 1 and lose to a 6 pool vs a former master 1 that you won't be placed in bronze league. I ended up in low Silver, although I wouldn't be surprised if I ended up back into the high bronze at one point. X.x

Hooray, i dropped from diamond to silver. I hate resets, I don't get to slack off >.<

Wow nice that you were diamond. I used to be Silver 12 then got demoted to Bronze 27 and only got up to Bronze 12 or something until recently. At one point I started wondering why I even bothered anymore, considering I tried many tricks people told me and tried doing most stuff said in Bronze tutorials. When I got demoted from plat to gold in 4v4 I was happy and if I got demoted to silver I wouldn't mind too much, but I must tell you that getting demoted from a low league to the lowest possible league really hurts, especially since it happened after I played 5 games a day during 3 months. I hope this won,t happen again this time, else I think I'm just gonna quit bothering about 1v1 or simply don't try as hard. Even in Bronze I still managed to lose 10 games in a row sometimes.

I only got to diamond because at the beginning there were plenty of inexperienced people. Now, I don't stand a chance :P

Ah ok. Personally at first, in Silver, I often lost to void rays and reaper rushes until I figured out how to be prepared. However, after they required a factory for the reaper speed upgrade, everyone started going MM, and it took me ages to figure out that roaches just plain suck vs marauders and that I needed to expand asap to not get outmassed by their marauder/marine constant pushes. I would survive the first push, but not the 2nd. Eventually I got demoted to bronze. Then I figured out how to deal with that, but I have serious troubles vs toss (Colossi)

LOL I have to start playing SC2 again. Haven't been on for over 3 weeks I believe. Trying to get into masters again is gonna be a pain :(

Only 15%? If I installed it on mine, I'm sure it would be 85% or something like that :P

Hmmm...actually, demotion to bronze would not be terrible for me.  I was in high silver, so when I can get back to playing, if I get demoted to bronze somehow I will WHIP all the bronze players into shape!  Wah-ha-ha-ha!

Well what sucked is that I was demoted from Silver 12 to Bronze 27 X.x. Bronze 12 would have been more tolerable. Also even in Bronze I could still not hold a record above 49% win ratio. However, I heard that 50% of the players were Bronze, so that's a wide range of players. In Bronze, people claim everyone cheese and that they only get like 5 drones and never scout, but that's wrong: I even see people going Phoenix harrass and trying other strategies we normally only see in gold or higher.

On a side note here's how I got placed, just to tell how ranking is: X.x

1v1 low Silver, after winning a long ZvZ game. I did some mistakes in it like not scouting his banelings later in the game and sending a huge wave of speedlings to kill his expo drones, but otherwise he never really got to attack me as by the time he got a decent army I always decimated it with my loads of roaches, in addition to keeping trying to destroy his expansion. It helped that I scouted his fast expand, though, as I went with an early roach push. Original rank was Bronze, so I guess my new ranking isn't really innacurate.

2v2 gold, in an hard game, but where I sucked near the end as I forgot upgrades and one enemy terran had lv 3 attack. We nearly got decimated but the enemy basewas nearly gone as my ally had his massive army over there and I was defending our bases. In this game it helped that I scout the 6 pool rush that got followed by non-stop zergling waves. He didn,t even go roach and I had some banelings, so bye bye zerglings, and later his muta harrass was rather weak. Personally I feel I should've been in silver instead of gold.

3v3 silver. For odd reasons, 3v3 was always considerably harder than 1v1, 2v2 and 4v4 at Starcraft II. O.O I am surprised I was not ranked in low bronze there, because in 3v3, bronze is the equivalent of gold in 4v4 and silver is the equivalent of platinum. I guess fewer people play 3v3 and mostly hardcore sc players do. Anyway we got owned badly so I eventually gg'ed along with my team.

4v4 platinum. I do not know if we won or lost, because the game lasted much longer than I expected and I had to leave for work, so I left. By the time I left we were starting to get dominated, though, so I guess we were probably on the verge of losing. Don't ask me why I was ranked to platinum. I think I should be gold at most or low platimum. O.O (In plat I often owned, until I started playing only vs diamond and master then getting matched with crappy teams)

Personally my rankings should have been in the following ranges, based on my performances in season 1:

1v1 High bronze to high silver
2v2 Low silver to high silver
3v3 Low bronze to medium bronze (or low copper, if the rumors about the return of copper league are true)
4v4 High silver to low platinum
