Starcraft 1: For those with Windows Vista/7

MY CD IS TOO OLD AND WON'T RUN UNDER VISTA/7
Ok, so as some people might have discovered, older retail copies of Starcraft will not install on Windows Vista and 7. As a Cooliojazz friend reported, you will get errors even in compatibility mode. Here's how to fix it the legal way
and it will only work if you have a legit CD key, meaning bought the game
:
1) Go to
http://www.battle.net
and register
2) Once done, in your account, under the Manage My Games section, click Add or Upgrade a Game and enter your old CD-Key there.
3) Once done you'll be given a brand new CD-Key and Starcraft will be added to your game list. Now you can download Starcraft from there as you wish!
As a bonus: if you didn't have Brood War before, now you get it for free!
Keep in mind this is a slow P2P download, though, and will take near one hour as it is 1.2 GB large.
This should fix your problem.
The alternative way to do this is to simply pirate it. Just find a torrent of the game and download a recent install. Don't bother about keygens or cracks, your new CD Key will work.
Keep in mind we will not provide such links here as it is illegal and that we won't hold responsible if you get any viruses or damage your computer by updating this way
.
UNDER WINDOWS 7, COLORS ARE ALL GLITCHED UP IN MENUS AND GAME LOBBY, EVEN WITH ALL COMPATIBILITY SETTINGS ENABLED.
Before running the game, right click your desktop and select Screen Resolution. Leave this open and start the game. For odd reasons, this often fixes the problem. You'll need to reopen the window everytime you want to play SC, though. Keep in mind inside games, colors renders fine, though, so don't bother doing this if you don't care about glitchy menus.

I told someone last night that I would post pics of how Starcraft game lobby looks like on Windows 7. As a bonus I also screenshooted the Battle.Net menus after you press the Windows key to minimize the game then go back in the game. As mentionned above, inside a game it's pretty fine, though, except if you hit the Windows key in the middle of it. I also think there are some glitches with fog of war on certain maps, but they're very rare. The reason why I used a digital camera is because with the PrintScreen key, those color problems won't show up.

I found a fix that worked for me on Battlenet, although it's kinda weird since it involves killing explorer.exe:
taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe
\"StarCraft"\"StarCraft.exe"
start explorer.exe
In my case it's
taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe
C:\"Program Files (x86)"\"StarCraft"\"StarCraft.exe"
start explorer.exe
This appears to fix the color problem on Windows 7.

Yea it does that to me all the times.(Windows 7)
However, when I entered Battle.net, my color didn't crash.
Also, there's was no problem with my Vista, though.

I wonder if that happens on my bro's comp... I don't think he has SC installed anymore, though. Also my trick in the previous post has one annoyance: it closes all desktop windows when SC starts, so if you had important file locations open you better not run the game, or you'll have to re-open/search for them again.
Also I got a similar issue with Ys Eternal I and II, but running in 256 colors, 640x480 and disabling desktop themes fixed it, unlike SC.

It seemed to work for me, but I see you have the color issue too.

Yeah, now I just do that Explorer.exe killing trick. The only annoyance is that it closes many stuff upon launching, but the game looks perfect aside from the widescreen issue.
Do you play SC1 or 2 online sometimes, by the way?

Well it should be in the first links in Google. It contains a patch that adds their server to the server list. Hopefully it might work. I don't link to it directly because I don't know if it's legal, so I don't want to get in trouble with my hosting provider.

Yeah you just install a patch that adds their server. I'm not sure how good latency is, though. Most Omni players play there when they play SC because none of them got a CD key anymore or Battle.net is overran by hackers. I know I was unable to join Cooliojazz games, though. I usually have to start them myself...
