When NES games costs more than half of the PS3/360 games
« on: April 10, 2011, 08:55:56 pm »
I found this today at Dimension Jeux Vidéos, which recently opened in Quebec city close to the EB Games. They had 3 copies of Chrono Trigger with the box for a bit over $200 each! O.O

Nice, I actually bought a new NES 9 years ago for $25.99 including the NES Zapper and SMB+Duck Hunt. The store had all 4 Dragon Warrior games, but I only like the 4th one, for some reasons. I had a NES as kid, but it broke in 2 years and we got a SNES later, which we sold for a N64 5 years later (big mistake). Later I ended up getting a SNES again XD.

For NES and SNES systems, the store pretty much only had rare games, unlike the store in my city, which mostly had the ones nobody wants or that are easy to find for $5-10. I was shocked at how much the value of some of these games increase with the time, considering I got Secret of Mana for $40 and Dragon Warrior I for $6.95 10 years ago, which are now $89.99 and $19.99 respectively. Starcraft 64 was as expensive as Starcraft II for the PC, even though it's worse to play than the original PC version and requires an expansion pack for the campaing. XD

Nowadays I mostly play those games on emulator, but sometimes it's kinda cool to turn ON the old NES and play the original way, not to mention these huge "tapes" gain value over time so selling them in a few years could be rewarding. :P

Myself I have a N64 with a couple of cartridges, it stills works like a charm. Should play more with it, I still haven't beaten Super Mario 64.

Also, my local video club store is selling some old N64 games for 24$. Which is kinda nice.

DJ, I'm sure you can find some NES games for cheap at the flea market. That's how my brother bought some rare N64 games, at Jean-Talon.

I finally cleared my sig after 4 years you're happy now?

Let's see, I have a NES, Atari, N64, PS2, and Wii.  Including some interesting games that might be worth something later. (Mario+duckhunt anyone? :D)

EDIT: Also just found this: http://www.dan-dare.org/FreeFun/Games/Archive/DuckHunt.htm

Yeah true, some people usually don't know the value of these things and will sell rare games for cheap. I personally got a bunch of old consoles, although the 3 Nintendo ones have a loose cartridge slot, making it hard to boot games. I also got a RetroDuo, which is a 3rd-party NES+SNES clone in one. It doesn't run SMRPG, tho, apparently.

The consoles aren't usually the valuable things, though, unless they're unopened.

I bet the SMRPG problem is due to buggy Mode7 emulation. Does F-Zero run?

The SMRPG cartridge doesn't work in fake SNESes because of they lack the CIC lockout chip.

I had the SNES as a kid, and bought one fairly recently back.. however Ive sold that one and I'm planning to buy another one. Not to play nintendo's games however.. but to play my own hacks on it :P

That also means ill have to shell out $60 for a game doctor SF7 to play ROM's on via floppy disks.. which means ill also have to buy a floppy drive! XD
Unless I can get my hands on the *INCREDIBLY* rare CD7 made for the system.. which sells at $200

the reason being, most people run their roms on zsnes and test them on that.. I wanna make sure compatability is no issue whatsoever if I can run it on the real deal

I have a bunch of old systems, NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, Atari 2600. I only had a NES system growing up with a bunch of games and then my mom gave everything away to a family. I was pissed. I had a lot of handheld systems, Game Gear, all the Gameboys, a ton of those LCD games. Anyhow when I started a job about 7 years ago the first thing I did was started collecting old systems and games. Growing up I never took care of the boxes/manuals with the NES games so I started buying all mint CIB games. I have quite the collection of near mint, complete with everything, classic games ranging from all those systems above.

I have a Chrono Trigger that I payed $50 bucks for, its in awesome shape but the box shows some wear. I go through my collection about 2-3 times a year and clean out all the games. It's cool looking through all those old manuals for like MegaMan even Super Mario Bros 3. Quantum Fighter and Metal Storm are still some of my favorite games.

I think he meant factory-sealed box. A brand new NES like this would surely be expensive on Ebay.

And nice Madskillz. Personally I don't have many boxes or manuals since the games were used and sold without them. Most of my games however are now hard to find. I mostly have stuff like Secret of Mana, Breath of Fire, Mega Man 3, Final Fantasy 1, Legend of Zelda 1/2/A Link to the Past (the latter is in French) and lots of other RPGs.

Btw did anyone know that the game on the right in that pic was made by Squaresoft (now Square-Enix)? It was before they almost went bankrupt.

It's actually normal for extremely old products to be more valuable, but such a difference is not fair in my view.

On Ebay you can usually find them for cheaper, but sometimes a lot of people bid and they end up more expensive. Also it depends of the rarity or quality of the products. Super Mario Bros is easy to find online or in used game stores, so it will generally cost $0.50-2 max.
