I can't imagine how hard it is to play games that used to be played with a d-pad on a touchscreen. I bought Secret of Mana for the iPod Touch a few years ago during the short time I actually used that device and I regret it just for that reason. It's barely impossible to control your character properly. Notice how most HP Prime games use the d-pad too.

actually N64 games aren't that bad on the M64 emulator since the D-pad is octagonal and pretty well designed
those C buttons though...
oh and did I mention I mapped my volume keys as Z and L triggers? (else Z-targeting would be simply impossible)
in the end, the configuration I had made it playable enough (although I had a really hard time aiming at anything with the bow/hookshot, but then again, most of the gameplay revolves around Z-targeting)

Lol you could also do like me and hack up a mounting bracket to hold your phone to a ps3 gamepad.
* Streetwalrus brings this or his GC at school
Speaking of GC I'm currently playing Sonic Adventure DX. I heard it's actually a direct port from the Dreamcast version. Graphics make me puke *ducks for cover*, but the game itself is quite a lot of fun.

I got the Humble Sid Meier Bundle which ended a few days ago, and lasted 2 weeks.
It included:
Pay $1 or more: Civilization III Complete, Civilization IV Complete, Railroads, Ace Patrol, Ace Patrol: Pacific Skies
Pay more than the average price (over $10 by offer end): Civilization V, Civilization V: Gods and Kings expansion, [added after one week: 2 Civlization V DLC, Sid Meier's Pirates!]
Pay $15 or more: Civilization V: Brave New World expansion
Plus, The award-winning Civilization IV Theme song, Baba Yetu, and the full Civilization V soundtrack.
The offer was too good to pass up, $100+ worth of games on Steam for $15. I paid $15.01.

Nice
. Also yeah for N64 games I couldn't play them on a keyboard either, so I use my PC gamepad with the C buttons mapped to my right joystick, so those buttons pretty much becomes a second joystick like on PS or XBox controllers.

I picked up two n64 controllers for €7,50 each. The blue one has a great analog stick. The green one has an okay stick, but it will need a bit of grease.
Not my pictures, but these are the colors I got now.

My favorite gamepads are the GameCube controller and the Dualshock 3 (PS3). The N64 pad looks pretty weird to me with it's trident shape and since the d-pad is barely used it must be weird to hold in the middle.
Also I map the C buttons to the right stick too. It just sounds logical.

Yeah the n64 controller is pretty weird, but also revolutionary.

Yes because analog stick I know. And NES had a d-pad, SNES had shoulder buttons, GC had analog triggers, Wiimote is motion based and the Wii U pad has a touch screen. If you ask me Nintendo look like they spent more time working on the controller than the hardware past the GameCube.

Me too. I joined GC-Forever since I hooked it up again. Waiting for my mom to let me order a WiiKey fusion and an SD Gecko then I'll look into writing homebrew for it.
Also, how do you hook up the Cube to your TV ? I have the official SCART cable and RGB looks wonderful on my early 720p Pioneer PDP.

I don't see how an analog stick is revolutionary when Atari did it 14 years before the N64 came out
(Atari 5200), but I guess bringing joysticks back was a good thing that Nintendo did.
I myself don't like the GC controller much because some buttons seemed placed weirdly and were akward to reach when I tried playing Windwaker. I prefered the N64 style, except how it seemed to be designed for three hands. Same for the original XBox gamepad. I prefer the 360 ones because the white and black buttons were moved as L-R buttons like on PS controllers.

Well I definitely HATE all the Xbox pads but it's just my opinion. I find them bulky, heavy and uncomfortable to hold.
Also even though the ps3 pad's layout is more conventional, it's awkward to play GC games on an emu with it due to this. On the cube you can easily press three buttons at once too.

I agree that the action buttons on the gamecube controller are a bit akward, but you get used to it when you play a loooot of smash bros
