Ys RPG series
« on: November 09, 2010, 03:34:44 pm »
Anyone here ever played the Ys series? I like it a lot and I have Ys Book I and II (Ys I and II bundled together) on Wii Virtual Console (Turbografx-16/PCEngine). I also got a copy of the PC version called Ys Eternal. Besides that I like Ys II, III and both versions of IV, and I played Ys The Ark Of Napisthim a bit, too. Ys III is nice too, although it's a platformer instead of top down view and is very hard.

Here are some videos of the original game:

PC88

PCEngine/Turbografx-16

Nintendo Entertainment System/Famicom.

Sega Master System

Playstation 2

PC (Same as PS2 but with different music and has my favorite final battle theme)

PSP

Nintendo DS

There was also a FM-77AV and DOS version of it, but I couldn't find any video of them. The japaneese version of the SMS one also got better music than the american version.

Indeed. The Turbografx-16 version isn't too hard, though, and the Eternal version got difficulty settings. In easy mode it's ok at least.

Yeah, except that you gain experience to increase your HP/MP/power, while in Zelda you must collect pieces of heart hidden at places.

I had that idea in mind actually. First I would prefer experimenting with a mini RPG, though, because I never wrote a working tilemapper in Axe, let alone a RPG.

I just discovered something strange in the Ys series, after reading a Youtube comment and I am surprised I didn't notice until now.

This is Ys' music for when you get an item

And now here's Metroid's:

Notice something similar?? O.O (Btw the first Metroid game came out in 1986 and Ys in 1987)

Oh, wow. That is pretty odd. I never noticed that either, though I haven't really played too many Metroid games to be fair.

Tangentially related, I keep forgetting to hunt down a copy of the PSP remake of Ys III, and the first sound clip reminded me I should do that. :P

Spoiler For Projects:

My projects haven't been worked on in a while, so they're all on hiatus for the time being. I do hope to eventually return to them in some form or another...

Spoiler For Pokemon TI:
Axe port of Pokemon Red/Blue to the 83+/84+ family. On hold.

Spoiler For Nostalgia:
My big personal project, an original RPG about dimensional travel and a few heroes tasked with saving the world.
Coding-wise, on hold, but I am re-working the story.

Spoiler For Finale's Super Insane Tunnel Pack of Doom:
I will be combining Blur and Collision Course into a single gamepack. On hold.

Spoiler For Nostalgia Origins: Sky's Story:
Prequel to Nostalgia. On hold, especially while the story is re-worked.

It's a FinaleTI!  *.*

Where have you been? ???

Also if you can't find the PSP version you can buy it on Steam now (as well as Ys 7). Just wait when they run crazy Summer/holiday sales so you can get it for $7 or something.

I'm myself hoping that the US version of Ys IV for PSVita doesn't get cancelled because I liked both Ys IV games. All 3 are different since they're not ports of each others and are made by different companies, but they're all based on the same story (the SNES and PS Vita ones being closer) and share similar soundtracks.
