Alternate Charging Port for Nspire CX
« on: February 22, 2014, 11:12:23 pm »
I'm pretty sure the charging port on my nspire is shot; it looks rather damaged.
So I've been stuck with a dead battery.

Can I somehow use one of the other ports to charge? Or am I stuck with an unchargeable calculator?

I know that it's possible to charge from the back. Beyond that, I don't know what pins to do anything with :P

Are you sure it isn't just the battery that's bad?

Well, when charging stopped working, I still had a few days of battery left.

You can always take out the battery and charge it. A charger for R/C batteries should work. It is just a matter of acquiring the right connector.

EDIT: Actually, now that I think about it, can't it charge from the docking port?

Yes it can. I'm no Nspire expert though so I can't do more than confirm it.

Yes it can.
from http://tiplanet.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13193&p=149999:

is the list of known pins. If you connect 5V to the medium pins and ground to the long pins, it should charge. I know it at least will power my clickpad, but I haven't tried it with my CX.

Spoiler For some of the calcs I own:

(actually I have quite a few more than this, but I don't feel like making bars for them all.)

i have the same problem.. and while TI has no batteries for sale atm... i'm using an old phone battery. sinds the my nspire battery was dead i soldered the connector the my 'new' battery.. but sadly it only charges in my old phone.

i'm making a dock connector at the moment, i just finished my first prototype eagle board and i will mill it at school after my holiday :)
i may produce some more for people who want to prototype with the dock connector. i may need to make a topic about it.

if you are going to do something with your old battery be warned, it is dangerous to disassemble various parts. and short it for to long can create an unstoppable fire.

edit: read to fast not the same problem, my battery is dead and not my charging port.

I've seen replacement batteries online, though I'm not sure how much they can be trusted with quality.

I'm pretty sure that if the charging port in which you connect an USB cable was broken, then file transfer would have stopped working too, so it's most likely a battery problem.

Nope. If it's just the +5V pin that's broken then it should transfer fine. If you can solder I'd recommend changing the connector though.

did you try one of the Vin pins? i'm not sure if you damage your device if you use them. but are you sure your batterie is not dead? it is best if you find that out first.

In the op he says the connector looks rather damaged. You should change it, you probably have a device from which you can salvage the connector.
