Help with sending new OS to TI 83+ SE
« on: July 17, 2010, 01:26:00 pm »
I tried to send OS 1.19 to my new TI-83+ SE, as it had 1.15 before, but something went wrong and now it seems to be OS-less and it won't properly connect to the computer. What should I do?

I'm using Windows 7 64-bit and TI-Connect with the 64-bit patch.

Spoiler For Projects:

My projects haven't been worked on in a while, so they're all on hiatus for the time being. I do hope to eventually return to them in some form or another...

Spoiler For Pokemon TI:
Axe port of Pokemon Red/Blue to the 83+/84+ family. On hold.

Spoiler For Nostalgia:
My big personal project, an original RPG about dimensional travel and a few heroes tasked with saving the world.
Coding-wise, on hold, but I am re-working the story.

Spoiler For Finale's Super Insane Tunnel Pack of Doom:
I will be combining Blur and Collision Course into a single gamepack. On hold.

Spoiler For Nostalgia Origins: Sky's Story:
Prequel to Nostalgia. On hold, especially while the story is re-worked.

Press and hold delete for a couple seconds, then while still holding del, pop a battery. The screen to send the OS should pop up and you can try to resend the os again.

Thanks. I just got it to work, though. I'll remember that if it acts up though.

Now pressing certain keypresses will reset my RAM. I've done a full Mem reset to try and fix this, yet it is happening again with a new key combo. It used to happen with 2nd + the multiplication key. I haven't isolated the new keypress yet and they don't always reset the RAM. Would this be a problem I could fix by downgrading to say OS 1.18? I've only crashed once since my full Mem reset, so maybe this is just a fluke, or an extremely rarely triggered OS bug.

Possibly. Another, unlikely, hopefully untrue, possibility is that the ROM is at the end of its life and is failing.
However, if downgrading works, good for you :)

Since my post, it has not crashed. As far as I know, it was fairly new, as the only data on it when I got it was all the default apps it comes with. I kinda wanna say Omnicalc had somthing to do with the crash, since I had it oncalc while the crashes occured, but after removing it, as well as everything else, I havn't had a problem except for that one random crash.

That's good, seeing as there's no easy way to get around a worn out flash chip.
Have fun with your new (for you :P) 83+SE!

I'm glad it works fine now. If it fails again, I suggest resetting the entire memory THEN reinstalling an OS (preferably kill the transfer, then retry again, to make sure your calc is OS-less before sending a new OS). Otherwise maybe an ASM program have hit something bad like the certificate, altough it is not likely.

Hmm... Now it seems to spontaneously RAM clear.
Could this be a problem with the back-up battery? Or perhaps it's the certificate?
If it is a certificate problem, how would I fix it? I tried resending OS 1.19 several times and I cleared my mem before each time, yet it still crashes.

What compelled you to update the OS anyways?

Qazz: Always make sure to have the latest OS version, because some of the older OSes got odd bugs.

I don't know about 1.15 and 1.16, but I know 1.14 or below had a nasty equ>string bug (search the site for it), 1.13 had some bugs causing RAM clears and 1.17 wasn't too stable, apparently.

I don't know about 84+ OSes, though. Just make sure to not update to 2.53 MP unless you really like the new features.

1.19 *should* be more stable than 1.15 if I'm not mistaken. Plus, I'm just used to having 1.19, since that's what was on my TI-83+ BE.

I poked BrandonW with this topic link on IRC, in case he is lurking, since I am not too sure how to help on the issue above. Usually when an OS reinstall doesn't solve your issues, it is not too good. You did a full mem reset then resent the OS, right? Sometimes a full mem clear also help. When I tried compiling apps on my 83+ with Axe, it totally messed up my user archive and I was forced to mem clear to fix the errors I got everytime I turn the calc ON

Yeah. I'll probably give another try tommorow, in case I had messed up before. That said, I think I'll leave app compiling for my 84.

It's probably not the certificate causing you problems as you can actually validate the OS's.

Right now you're in one of those cool times where you don't care if you have an OS or not, which means that you can test to see if indeed you have worn out your flash. So, somehow kill your OS. Stopping halfway through a transfer like DJ said should probably do it. Then, turn your calculator on while holding Mode. One of those two will put you in the boot code self test. It works just like the regular one except it also tests flash. Once its done, press enter instead of on to continue.

If that's not your problem, at least the flash test will completely wipe out all your memory. (not certificate though)

I just did the test on my friends calc which he let me borrow for the summer :P. It's really cool.
