How to display an equation the way I want
« on: April 10, 2011, 07:29:07 am »
Is there any way to display an equation the way I want, instead of the way my nspire wants?

For example:

What do you mean? I have no problems with that, I love MathPrint.

The equation on the left is the one that I want to be displayed, just like that, but the nspire always "simplifies" to the one one the right

Well most likely it is being simplified like that is because most CAS systems won't put things under a root in the top of a fraction (since it's not officially correct that way) -- so really, it's helping you answer an extra step ;)

What if I dont want that help?

That was just an example, but I have huge equations that I need them to be displayed just the way I enter them. Is that possible?

Well, one thing you can try is to group parts you want together in parenthesis, which might trick it into thinking it needs to show your equation first.

If that doesn't work, then I don't know -- but someone more familiarized with the Nspire might.

As far as I know, I do not think that this is possible to do. :(

In some math, rationalizing the numerator as opposed to the denominator can be favorable.  I guess the CAS is going on this route before returning its answer.

Well if I create a Note and enter my equation in a mathbox it will be displayed the way I want (without evaluating it)

I want to be able to this but not in the Note page.

It's actually been traditionally more correct to leave the root in the numerator instead, but I guess calculators don't need that anymore.

I believe the reason the root is ending up in the denominator is simply because it's combining like terms. The √X in the numberator is being combined with the X in the denominator, giving √X in the denominator. I could be wrong, but that's my hypothesis at least.

It's a valid simplification, but I don't think there's a valid way to keep it unsimplified, unfortunately. Maybe as a string?

Yeah, it's just multiplying by sqrt(x)/sqrt(x) to get the x terms to cancel and get sqrt(x) in the bottom.  I would try parenthesis or something.

parenthesis dont work because nspire just deletes useless parenthesis.
