Installing 3.1 on Ti - nspire cx CAS
« on: August 26, 2013, 07:11:58 pm »
I was on 3.2 but then i deleted my os. My calc is currently on the INSTALL OS NOW loading screen. I have the 3.1.tcc file i need but when ever i try and install it, the student CAS software says that i can't install an OS that is older than the current one.

Hi!

Your calculator did probably come preloaded with OS 3.2.4 and Boot2 3.2.4.

Can you please give us the datestamp of the calculator?
The datestamp is a 7-characters code written on the back at the right of the serial number.

^ Here it's P-0411A for exemple, meaning the calculator was manufactured in the P-factory (China) in april 2011 and does include the hardware revision A of the motherboard.

For now, to get an OS on it, you can download the correct one from http://education.ti.com/nspire/os324. There may be an exploit found which takes care of this downgrading issue, but for now, a calculator with an OS is better than one without.

Spoiler For some of the calcs I own:

(actually I have quite a few more than this, but I don't feel like making bars for them all.)

So far, no exploit AFAIK, though...

Getting our hands on such a machine would be helpful for anyone if we (well, the people who do know how, at least :P) end up finding what's changed and especially how to reverse/counter that.

I wonder if trading (exchanging) a machine with someone who has it, for a non-J one would be OK ?
The less distance between people, the better, though, since international costs are not so negligible

Yeah the best from now on is to buy used models on Ebay/Amazon while still avoiding getting scammed, but first, ask the seller if the serial number is like that. I think calcs from A to I are fine. However they might come with OS 3.2.4 or higher, which is still kinda problematic.

Hello,

Why is it impossible to remove the bone 3.2 by formatting the memory of the calculator (like when you uninstall windows) to install version 3.1 (as if you installed Windows XP instead of Windows 7)?

The protection is stored/located in an area of memory that isn't erased when formatting the calculator IIRC, therefore you can't get around it.

Ok thank you,

Have you any idea how long it will take for us to downgrade the bone?

OS 3.1 was released in september 2011, and Ndless 3.1 came out 4 months later in january 2012.

But at that time TI was much less serious about security and there were much more active people in the development team... It may take longer this time...

And the next OS 3.6 which should be released in the next weeks may bring even stronger protections... It may take much longer this time...

On the other hand, Ndless 3.1 came out much longer after OS 3.0.1 came out. The previous version was for OS 1.7, 2.0.1 and 2.1. So basically, after OS 3.0.1 came out, it actually took 10 months before we see a new Ndless build. That said, with OS 1.1 it took nearly three years.
