New CX
« on: August 11, 2013, 09:30:58 pm »
I just purchased a TI nspire CX (non-CAS). I was looking to install some emulators through ndless, but the OS (3.2.4) is too high. I have tried downgrading the OS. I was even stuck without one for about 30 minutes as TI doesnt provide one new enough. Is there any way for me to install ndless? If not, is there any alternate method for installing emulators?

Thanks

Yeah, that's the problem. The only way to downgrade is with the RS232 port, which involves soldering stuff, getting a TTY converter and some other advanced knowledge.

Is there a version of NDLess planned for 3.2.4 or any alternatives that are compatible with this OS?

I think you'll have to wait for the release of OS 3.6. Even then, you'll have to wait some time until the devs port Ndless to that version of the OS.

It's not necessary to solder stuff for getting reliable access to the RS232 TTL port, but for the rest, Juju is right.

Hey guys, I have the same problem and did some research on this as well.
I'm not trying to hijack this thread.
Would anyone mind giving some insight on what type of converter this should be?
I saw this http://www.amazon.com/USB-TTL-Converter-FT232RL-3-V/dp/B00BIF471O as it seemed most similar to http://ourl.ca/10147/196556

I am extremely new here and just bought the Nspire CX.

If anyone could provide n00b information or resources, much would be appreciated!

Yes, that is what you need to downgrade the CX.
Once you got the USB2TTL, you can follow the guide to flash 3.1 boot2 into your calculator, and then use nLaunch to get OS3.1 working on your calculator.Final step, download nsNandMgr and remove the downgrade protect.
Sorry for my poor English.

Limesoda & Showboo, could you please report us the datestamp written on the right of your TI-Nspire CX serial on the back?

We'd like to make a rule for determining if a calculator comes with the new 3.2.4 OS based on the datestamp.
For example, we've been reported datestamp P-0313J came preloaded with OS 3.2.4 (manufactured in march 2013, hardware revision J)

And I'd like to know if you've tried the RS232 adapter and if it did work.
Thanks.

on IRC, I was talking to FroxtyFox, who was trying to downgrade through rs232, but was unable to. I was able to downgrade in the emulator, which makes me think that it is using some hardware that nspire_emu isn't emulating. He did exactly the same thing that I did in the emulator, but something was preventing him from doing it.

(actually I have quite a few more than this, but I don't feel like making bars for them all.)

I know fortytwo.
The (bad) news is coming.

But I would have liked to get a confirmation from someone else before.

Edit: the first news about the problem has just been posted in french on TI-Planet:
http://tiplanet.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=12883#p147130

It's coming in english soon - but this is very bad news.

You cannot downgrade the Boot2 to version 3.1 anymore on new TI-Nspire CX hardware revision J which come preloaded with Boot2 3.2.4, not even by using RS232.

The Boot2 3.1 just crashes if flashed on those models:

So, no Ndless and no Nlaunch for new TI-Nspire CX.

O.O this sucks man, although to be honest, with the delays between Ndless versions and the OS releases now, this seems more and more likely that eventually they'll succeed at fixing every exploit and perhaps even remove the serial dock completely like on Chinese models and Ndless will be gone for good. When I saw what they did with OS 2.1, to me it was only a matter of time before Ndless is done for good. Hopefully a community group/member finds a new workaround, but for how long will the workaround work?

This is why I felt that from now on, people who don't need a CAS but wants a color screen should go with the 84+CSE or Casio Prizm and others with the HP Prime, providing it's not too expensive.

The Dock connector is not a problem on TI-Nspire CM, as the RS232 pins are also available on the internal J04 connector.
