New TI-Nspire? Help!!!
« on: November 30, 2010, 01:12:55 am »
Hello Omnimaga.

I, along with millions of students this year, are required to purchase a new TI-Nspire CAS Touchpad (OS 2.0) in our many booklists  8) . My question to you, omnimaga, is what are the basic "things" we need to use the calculator for functions such as running homebrew programs. You seem to take the knowledge of GameBoy Color (gba4nspire or TI-Boy) emulation for granted, yet if one was to download the wrong upgrades (OS 2.1) the calculator would be rendered useless  >:( . What OSes are compatible with which Ndless versions, and it it even required for gaming at all. What do we all need to buy - as rendering a $400 calculator unable to run tetris is apparently a common fate - and how do we go about doing this?  ???

Is downgrading to OS 1.7 a good step, or is this impossible from 2.0. Will Ndless even work in 1.7 (and what version) or is it TOO beta for the moment. The majority of your forum can do it, so please (PLEASE) educate us in the fine art of TI-Nspire. In conclusion, what do we do and when (step by step would be nice) can we do it!?!

Did you buy the calc yet? If not, then could you ask if a TI-Nspire CAS clickpad would do as well? Because sadly, I don't think OS 1.7 works on the Nspire CAS Touchpad. You can use Nleash to get rid of the anti-downgrade protection, but I don't think the calc will boot correctly. I don't remember about 1.1, though. To run 1.7 on the CAS Touchpad you will need to buy a TI-Nspire clickpad from TI website and good luck keeping it inserted in the calc: it's not very convenient... so if possible, get a Nspire CAS clickpad. Also, $400 seems like a bit much for a Nspire CAS. On TI website they're $160.00 but they no longer have the clickpad version for sale. I'm sure on Ebay they would go for much cheaper, too.

You would need to wait before doing anything, though, until someone with more experience on the Nspire than me answers you. In any case, if you are allowed to get a CAS clickpad model, try to get that instead. Otherwise, if you get a Touchpad, if it's impossible to get Ndless 1.1 or 1.7 on your CAS Touchpad,  you will have to wait until Ndless 2.0 arrives, which could take another while.

Welcome on the forums by the way!

I think you should buy the Clickpad version to play and homebrew and program?.

I recommend having the 84+ Keypad to play too.

As for school, the Clickpad is fine :)

Well... it'll require some kind of dremel and soldering work, right? And some kind of software surgery, too...

Remember: we are talking TI-Nspire CAS here. You can not change Keypad on TI-Nspire CAS with Clickpad (not even temporary like with TI-Nspire CAS with Touchpad where it's detachable but has slightly different form: on TI-Nspire CAS with Clickpad it's not detachable at all!) - and an OS does not include TI-84 emulator! That's why TI-Nspire CAS ROM is smaller despite addition of CAS!

I'm pretty sure there is a new CAS wich allows keypad swaping:

Will post link in a minute

Sure:TI-Nspire CAS with Touchpad. It's only compatible with OS 2.x and above. And you can swap keypad with another similar keypad - that's all. Keypads for regular TI-Nspire work fine if you'll manage to connect them, but they physically can not be inserted because of different form-factor!

Noone knows why TI added such an useless "feature". Perhaps for some kind of future product?

Oh, then he's doomed. Buy a regular CAS Clickpad will work, right?

Should work. From Ndless ReadMe.txt: "You need: A TI-Nspire CAS or non-CAS ClickPad. TouchPad models aren't supported except if you have a non-CAS ClickPad keypad". As I've said it's possible to attach non-CAS ClickPad to TI-Nspire CAS with Touchpad, but it's quite awkward because it physically don't "click" so you need to forcefully keep it in place.

Wasn't there a detachable clickpad keypad for Nspire CAS touchpads for a while for people that wanted to use the old one? If not, then I guess they plan another keypad eventually. Maybe TI-89T emulation?

But yeah if SatanicToothpaste gets a clickpad, he won't be able to use a 84+ keypad, should Calc84maniac eventually revives his Z80 and 68K emulators. (which used the 84+ keypad for more conveniences.)

And yeah calcforth I remember Critor posted a picture of how the keypad is connected on the CAS touchpad. Seems pretty akward, to me. I wonder if ductape is even strong enough to keep it in place?

Welcome to the Omni forums, hope you enjoy your stay.

Thanks JustCause. After lengthy decision, I - along with mates at school - are leaning towards the TI-Nspire TouchPad CAS. Being the latest and apparently greatest OS of the pack, it is currently the only calculator officially supported in my Mathematics Textbook anyway. Although homebrew is currently not supported via OS 2.1 (or 2.0 for that matter) I'd  rather wait for the new Ndless distribution. The balance between education and mario is just too idiotic.

Also, since the peak of prior discussion was at a degree of change, how different is the Touch/clickpad's software. Apparently the menus are totally different, despite the congruent naming of OS 2.1 for both tangents. You mentioned earlier that applying a clickpad is possible on the touchpad series. Would this be via opening the calculators hardware and manually rewiring? ...and would doing this allow installation of OS 1.7 (for Ndless) later?

Please help me out, as time is nearing its depletion!

Furthermore, does OS 1.7 differ completely to OS 2.1, or are they really identical in function input. I do NOT want to downgrade merely for the quick thrill of Mario. Is there a balance between the two. My fears are comparative to downgrading PC to Windows 95: full support for Commander Keen (DOS) vs support for Visual Basic and Office (7).

Thanks.

The Touchpad software has a different home interface, but I don't remember what are the new math features on it, as I never actually used a TI-Nspire for... maths. :P However, OS 2.0/2.1 are the exact same between the clickpad and Touchpads, except the different  keypad layout. For example, my TI-Nspire clickpad is currently running that OS. As for a CAS clickpad on a Nspire, you need to insert it at 30° angle and put some pressure on it with your hand and keep the pressure for the entire time you use the calc. Then the keypad layout is all scrambled. Basically, good luck playing Mario and doing maths with that setup.

That said, OS 1.7 has no Input/Request function. It was added in OS 2.0.

We do not know when Ndless will come out for OS 2.0.

TI loves to do this. release a newer version of the same calc and make the old one discontinued. then introduce it into booklists so that everyone has to buy programming-limited calcs while ti boasts about the latest tech in its calcs.

Lol, your textbooks already have the nspire in them! Two hers ago, my algebra 1 textbook had 83+/84+ examples, and last years algebra 2 textbooks had the original 83 in it. I would still try to get a clickpad cas, as they still support os 2.1 if you must use it, and over the summer or whenever, you can downgrade to 1.7 and use ndless.
