Send files from VTi to computer
« on: August 27, 2012, 01:36:06 am »
Hello,
I'm using VTi version 2.5 to emulate a Ti-89 and I wanted to know if it is possible to send files from the emulator to my computer, because I haven't figured out how to do that.
If it is not possible, is there another emulator for Ti-89 which contains this feature ?

Thank you in advance,
Torio
Sorry about my mistakes, I'm French.

People still use VTI?? O.O (it doesn't even run on my 64-bit Windows 7 computer)

That said I don't think this was possible and I am unsure if any other emulator allows so. A better alternative to VTI would be TiEmu, though. VTI hasn't been updated in over 12 years, while TiEmu is still being updated on a regular basis today.

Well I use VTi because it was the first I found on Google and it works quite well for me, so I hadn't made any further researches.
I will switch to TiEmu but, just to be sure I've well understood, you said this emulator cannot send files to the computer, right ?

Anyway, can TiEmu record gif ?

I don't think it can send files to the computer, but I am not 100% sure. You would need to ask Lionel Debroux or another 68K expert. From what I remember, the only emulator that could send files to the computer was WabbitEmu, and sadly WabbitEmu doesn't have 68K calculator model support.

It can't record gif either. You need an extra program called CalcCapture and play with the settings.

Ok, I'm waiting for Lionel's answer if he happens to read this topic.  :w00t:

For gif recording, CalcCapture looks very nice I'll give it a try, thank you very much ! Before I saw your answer I also found another program called Cropper which could record a part of my computer screen in an animated gif and managed to take animated screenshots with it, but CalcCapture looks definitely more practical.

I'll have to check Cropper out, but back in the days, what I noticed with every alternative to CalcCapture is that they either 1) only did .avi, not .gif or 2) were not free and the trial version had severe limitations.

I guess VTI offers a workaround (or should i say roundabout), if you have a real the calculator (and Torio surely has at least one), check this:
  http://www.devhardware.com/forums/ti-83-84-102/vti-program-download-to-computer-285069.html
As a bonus, i've attached 2 shots from the emulator i use (2.5 bet6). It's quite good you know, imho, albeit a bit oldish i also agree.

See if it helps,

P.S. Not that i want (or even dare  ;)) to contradict the master DJ_O or anything, but ...

CalcCapture is great for capturing GIFs of calculator screens because that's all it was built for—taking animated screenshots of an emulator screen. It has some really nice options too, like palette (usually grayscale) and hotkeys.

Only quirks are that it hasn't been updated in a very long time and has some quirks (sometimes it adds a vertical black bar out of nowhere into the screenshot, it makes a loud beeping noise that I don't understand, etc.).
From what I remember, the only emulator that could send files to the computer was WabbitEmu, and sadly WabbitEmu doesn't have 68K calculator model support.
So does TilEm ... but still no 68K calcs :/

Well, I don't read any of the sections of Omnimaga or Cemetech on a regular basis. I rely on automated notifications (e.g. in the news section, and several others), and on direct notifications when people want to bring my attention to a particular topic ;)
The answer was already given before I found about the topic by myself in the IRC client, though.

TiEmu is still being updated on a regular basis today.
The libraries underlying TILP and TIEmu are getting improved, but actually, I seldom touch the horribly unmaintainable mess that the TIEmu code base is :)
Due to the C symbolic debugger, it's a complex, fragile mix of patched forks of various third-party software... and the number of users is very low.

TIEmu's "Listen for files" can be more reliable than VTI's equivalent. TIEmu has a much more complete and accurate emulation (several types of programs cannot be developed on VTI because it's just too incomplete / incorrect), supports more link cables for communicating with a real calculator (but few people do that); but TIEmu is slower than VTI and it depends on GTK+ - the price of accuracy and relatively better portability of the code base.

I wonder if in a not-so-distant future, WabbitEmu could actually become the new VTI in terms of supporting every calc?

Not sure...
A TI-Z80 emulator, a TI-68k emulator and a TI-Nspire emulator have little in common. They can use the same format for skins, and the same libraries for communicating with real calculators (TIEmu and TilEm do on both accounts), but the bulk of the rest is different.
TI-Z80 and TI-68k calcs are past their end of life (in TI's views), so it makes decreasing sense to create new emulators, or add such significant new features to existing emulators as support for more calculator families.

Yeah I was more talking in the sense of not having to install multiple emulators to run every model and also the lower grayscale quality seen in every existing 68K emulator. On z80 calcs, in Wabbitemu the user can adjust multiple grayscale parameters as he sees fit. In VTI and TIEmu, the dark and light grays in the grayscale constantly alternates between each others every now and then. Also in VTI, any 83/83+ grayscale that isn't 4 shades or gray nor ASM will look crappy.

Well, I had a Ti-89... It was lent to me by a friend but next year we are going to different schools so I won't be able to keep it. Your solution was clever but I can't use it, sorry. However, it gave me an idea which worked !

For those who are interested, here is the method to send files from VTi to a computer :
- Set the link cable to none (right click + enable cable link->none)
- In the emulator open var-link and select the files you want to send (with F4)
- Still in the emulator press F3 and select 'Send to TI-89/TI-92+'
- The files will be transfered onto your computer !

For TiEmu, same method except your have to set the link settings to internal.

Actually after trying TiEmu, I still prefer VTi for some reasons : TiEmu sometimes crashes, and it will resize the window automatically in full screen when you move the window near the top of the screen, and this is very, very annoying...
Sorry about my mistakes, I'm French.

That's great news. Perfect! i'm glad you've sorted it out by yourself, after a few hints. ;) That's what brainstorming is all about! With a simple question you've started, i would say, a little storm and...

Yeah it's fun when this happens. Just one thing, however: If, one day, you ever run into the other situation where you ask a question then immediately solve it by yourself without any hint, make sure to inform us about how you solved your issue. I know a lot of people in the past didn't. :P
