hello folks,
i just recently purchased an nspire cx cas calculator and learned that the student software can only be activated on a single computer after i have already activated the software on my computer. my situation is that i'm looking to upgrade to a newer laptop in a few months and need to have my student software activated on the new machine. i emailed ti support about my situation and haven't got a respond. now i'm thinking of returning the calculator back to the store and wait until i get my new computer and buy the calculator again. but i prefer not to do this since it is a hassle and i need the calculator and i'm using it for my class right now.

does any of you have situation similar to this where you have to get new activation for the newer computer you purchased or replacement computer from warranty.
what do you think are the success rate on something like this?
this whole single machine activation bull crap is so inconvenient. it seems like they are out to get the legitimate buyer, but the crook who crack the software can use it in anyway they like without spending a coin or get a slap on their wrist.

I think you can buy a licence for the software separately, if I'm right. Or else get TiLP (which is free and open-source), not sure it does everything the TI student software does, but I think it does the job.

And I agree, this single-use thing is pretty inconvenient. (I don't have any Nspire though so I can't really say in this particular case.)

The single use thing is REALLY annoying. TiLP does most things, but it makes copying Lua code from calc to comp much more difficult.

I don't know too much more, but I'd say returning it may work  :-\

Normally you can contact TI and they'll give you a new license, but I'm unsure why they didn't respond, so maybe they stopped doing that. That issue is really annoying because people have to reformat their computers or do system restores, sometimes.

You could use the TI-Nspire Computer software or TiLP instead.

Comments: In the past, I installed the TI-Nspire student software (non-cas) that came with the calculator on the family computer. Now, I have my own laptop, and I'm trying to install it on that.
I uninstalled the Student Software from the other computer using Uninstall.exe in C:Program Files (x86)TI EducationTI-Nspire Student Software , and it uninstalled successfully.

This is the error message I'm getting now, after I enter in the licence and plug in the calculator (the same one as before) :
"The TI-Nspire Handheld ( <product ID here> ) has already been used to install a software licence. [...] contact TI for further assistance."

The calculator is a non-cas CX, and the product ID is 1008000001140F43240D859A795 .

Can this be fixed so I can install the software on my new computer?

So to install it on a new comp you have to buy a new license.  Personally I prefer the computer link to the student software (even when I did have it working) because it doesn't take ~3 minutes to start up. :P
Also nspire_emu (or kArmTI) works great for an emulator. Also iirc there's an online thing TI made but idk if it's up/is up to date/still works/etc.

oh well. i was hoping for more positive success rate.
i'll give them a call on monday and see what they have to say. if things don't look up then this calculator is going back to the big lady.

Are you serious?!? The license for the student software costs almost as much as the calc itself! You may as well just buy a new calc if going in that direction. :P

yeah, or just buy the calc for the student software and sell the device as brand new never used for a reduce price. haha

Several times I've seen people asking for a deactivation of the license on one computer so that it could work on another, and TI accepted.

Hm, I might try that...was it TI-USA or TI-France that did that? They seems to be pretty different attitiude-wise..

This is the main reason why hackers are so active. TI like M$, Apple, etc only care about the dough and not that much about the students.That's the sad and raw reality. So, I say, thumbs up to the hackers community. :thumbsup:

When I had the same problem one year ago they just gave me a new license. But maybe they changed their mind in the past year, or it depends on where you live.

They answered this to me(translated):

but i don't want to do that. i mean yeah, i can go to a torrent site to download the software or find ways to crack the activation, or even worse go to a local stables/office depot store and buy another calculator for the activation key and return the calculator to the store. but that's stealing. i want own the software through buying it legitimately; a pride of owning it.

i'm currently using a 13" macbook pro laptop for school right now, and i'm looking forward to getting the newer 13" retina macbook pro when it comes out. and probably any other newer greater laptop comes along by apple, and this one machine activation is certainly an inconvenient.
