Ti84+SE misbehaving
« on: January 24, 2017, 09:04:38 am »
I was tried to edit a basic program at one point,  but it just disappeared and Doors spewed out a 'file not found' error and strange artifacts appeared on the screen. I
attempted to run the program,  but same error. This happened before a few times,  despite numerous OS reinstalls. Also,  when I was playing with another basic program,  most of my RAM momentarily disappeared until I reset it. Sometimes when I open the memory management menu,  for a split second I can see 4-pixel squares and a few arrows on the top 1/4th of the display. I am pretty sure I did not mess up the OS. Please help.

P. S. My calc is running at 16.59mhz. Is this normal?

What kind of shells and thelike are you using?

16.59MHz is still within the OK range

Doors CS 7.2. I am sure I am not using any bad software. Sometimes,  the calc even crashes for no reason. I garbage collect every time I finish editing or deleting an archived program. Any chance this might be an HW fault of some kind?

Is there any reproducable ways for you to trigger these glitches?

Sadly, these things happen at the random. Don't know what to say. These issues are very annoying and absolutely unpredictable.

Which OS version? 2.53MP is known to be fairly buggy, 2.55MP is pretty stable in my experience, but I have gotten it to randomly crash before.

Is there a way to fix such issues without downgrading (patches and the like), or am I looking at something more sinister? I have had these and/or similar issues since 2015. I've been using 2.55 for years now.

I'm sure there is a way to patch the OS to fix it. It would require the issues being reproducible elsewhere though. Since others can't reproduce this they can't look into what the root cause is. You currently aren't giving us much to work with. I would recommend NOT garbage collecting after every file edit. Just let the OS garbage collect when it needs to, all you are doing is adding load to the flash chip. Making it's lifespan potentially shorter.

You mentioned that you were running your calculator overclocked, I would recommend returning it to the normal clockspeed. The OS and most programs are designed to work with 6MHz and 15MHz modes, and lots of times assumptions are made based on that when it comes to timings. This could be causing unexpected behaviour.

Well,  I did not overclock my calc. It seems to be doing this on its own. The speed has increased slightly ober the past 2 years. Maybe some components wore down because  of the increased use ever since I discovered ticalc.org?
I really don't have much to say. The last crash erased the settings set by LCD fix, even though I did not pull the batteries (just resetting RAM normally doesn't erase that config). Also, of it means anything,  my calc was purchased in December 2009 and has P-0908M at the end of the serial number.

Processors cannot run at faster speeds on their own over time like you are describing.

As for other settings being lost, could you check to make sure the backup battery still has power? It might not which would be why you could lose settings on a battery pull.

Also, from what I can gather from Cemetech, you have been playing with overclocking your calculator.

From the name i guess LCD fix would send commands to the lcd driver which isn't powered by the backup battery

Right. The Readme also corroborates that http://www.ticalc.org/cgi-bin/zipview?83plus/asm/programs/alcdfix.zip;Readme.txt

That thing on Cemetech is total crap.I was to scared then to admit I was unsure or wrong. I admit I was wrong, but at the time didn't know what made the calc seem a little faster. My theory is that I probably screwed up some config setting or port value and messed the refresh rate up. Please do not remind me of the one mistake I made on Cemetech that doomed me and made a large number of members ridicule me and provoke me to emotionally react to everything. That thread is the main cause of all my trouble. I wish i could just fix that up and return to Cemetech and show them how good and smart I really am. As for the increased speed, my father (who has a PhD in electrical engineering) told me that crystal oscillators suffer from a little "age wear'' (perfectly understandable, since TI was probably planning to make users buy a new calc after some time, so they stuffed low quality components) and that 16.59mhz is within tolerance range (resistors are not precise). I am locking this topic because I haven't gotten any help and please DO NOT EVER MENTION ANYTHING I DID ON CEMETECH. I really want to have a decent reputation here and don't make me look bad.

First, please don't lock your threads. You have been getting help here, it's just that you haven't provided enough information for us to give you more help then we already have.
Second, please don't yell on the forums.
Third, if you admit that you were wrong, you probably should admit it there. I'm not the one making you look bad, you are making yourself look bad. Own up to your mistakes and attempt to learn from them.

Interesting thing about the crystal oscillators aging. I did a little reading into it, and if that is the case then you probably shouldn't have any problems with it doing what you are describing under normal use.

If you happen to get us some reproducible steps we will be able to actually triage what is going on.
Have you checked the backup battery to make sure it still has charge?
When you are editing programs and they seem to disappear are you editing them with the TI-OS editor or through some other program?
How are you determining the calculator's clock speed?
Could you elaborate on the following statement: "most of my RAM momentarily disappeared until I reset it"
