"What If" Discussion
« on: June 25, 2013, 02:50:51 pm »
You know when you're talking to someone, and you think: "What if I didn't meet this person?"

Or you are on Omni, and you think: "What if I didn't discover Omni?"

Discuss your "What If"s here.
I am Bach.

There would be many in my case that I thought about over the years (or that some others might have thought):

"What if the Nordiques had stayed in Quebec City for one more season?"
I wondered that before but I saw it in this video
(which is a spin-off from a 2010 NHL ad)
Also this text is a fictional story of what might have happened if the team had stayed in Quebec City beyond 1995 (it ends up leaving in 1998 instead) http://www.nordiquespreservation.com/whatif.html
NOTE: That husky logo on the page was officially supposed to happen in 1995-96 (although with slightly different colors), but they never got the chance to use it. But yeah, some people wonder if the team would have won the stanley cup in 1996 if they stayed (and if Patrick Roy would have been traded to them)

"What if Omnimaga had never re-opened?"
Something I thought around 2010 when the TI community kinda "revived". When Omnimaga shutted down for real in 2008, the entire TI community reached an all-time low activity. In March 2008 I remember that United-TI was even less active than it was in 2010 and 2011, despite most Omnimaga members having migrated there. Eventually, in August 2008 the site was revived due to high demand (although the old posts only returned 3.5 years later). The strong stance against hostility on Omni kinda convinced some people on other sites to migrate here until things calm down elsewhere, rather than leaving the community entirely, which might have helped reviving the community (since many Omni users frequents other sites). Around when Omni re-opened, the community was in terrible shape and the 2008 POTY had no Z80 entry. However, there are chances that Ndless and Axe played a bigger role (or one as big) than this.

"What if Ticalc.org had never opened at all?"

"What if Ndless would have never been possible at all?"

"What if Axe had never arrived?"

And one that I didn't think about but I thought the following vid was funny.
"What if Halo was made by Nintendo?"

I had to discover omni twice, actually. So, mostly it would have altered my login password.

Did you actually join on the old Invisionfree (or Zetaboards) site before it closed? Or did you happen to sign up here then forgot the URL or your password? I know that in May 2009 we lost one day of posts once so maybe as a coincidence you joined then :P

The only other account deletions that could have occured are permabanned accounts (which were deleted completely from 2008 to 2011), false spambot positives or the April 2012 data loss (1 day of posts)

Actually, I think I joined once, lurked for a long time, then stopped. Then I found the site again, found I still had a login.

It might definitively have been a new account, since your profile shows many posts from the first days after joining. :P

I seriously often wonder "What if I never knew about the game ?", because I find quite weird to react now to some sentences where some words are pronounced, and I often wonder "how would I have reacted if I didn't know about the game ?".

Also, what if my parents gave me a GameBoy with Pokemon on it when I asked for it when I was young ?
-> No will to program (because no motivating project)
-> No Pokemon Topaze
-> No Hayleia on Omnimaga (or maybe just testing other's programs but not programming myself)
-> Still no idea for a job
I own: 83+ ; 84+SE ; 76.fr ; CX CAS ; Prizm ; 84+CSE
Sorry if I answer with something that seems unrelated, English is not my primary language and I might not have understood well. Sorry if I make English mistakes too.

What if my school would've have taken two years longer to switch to TI calcs?
Well, I probably would me more active on a casio-site, but aren't they all french? That could have resulted in me not being in the community at all.

THE GAME

What if I had gotten a graphing calculator or computer to program way back in the 90's?

When I was 7-8 I got my NES (it was one year before it was discontinued, but games were still being sold and all and people still played it), the first game I got was Super Mario Bros 3. Only a few months after playing I started getting interest in creating games. However, I had no clue how they were made and I was almost a decade off from when I would finally have the chance to create any. As a result, since I couldn't resist with my creativity, I just drew rough drafts of SMB levels on paper (mainly the line forming the terrain, then blocks, enemies and ? blocks without much details). I did the same when I discovered RPGs a few years later, drawing maps on paper (rough drafts again), but also writing down every magic spell and damage they can cause.

Then I stopped drawing maps and got the idea to role-play with LEGO figurines and a small calculator for damage calculations, until I gave up on LEGO's. I bet that I still have a few of those maps somewhere, but sadly, I threw away some of my older notes from the late 90's, so I would most likely never be able to recreate any of those "games" in digital format.

Had I kept the ones from 1997, there might have been a Legend of Mana series for calcs at one point, planned and named before Square-Enix even released their own Legend of Mana game. :P

What if I never started coding in the first place?
Higher grades, No robotics, and a very unhappy life full of work and study (the only things I would be able to do).

What if I hadn't randomly typed ticalc in the url entry bar, and let auto-complete do the rest?
No Axe, no calc programming, no Omni D:

Well, good news, both those things happened. I started programming Java (I want(ed) to be a backend programmer, so I haven't learned the Swing libraries yet) about a year before I discovered ticalc. That was around when Axe got POTY (I think, maybe it was its feature), so I looked into it. Googled Axe, found the thread here. Lurked. Got an account later last year for help. Stayed. Started VVVVVV. Lost the game. Did a bunch of school. Got on break. Picked back up level design for VVVVVV. Started my Contest #10 entry. Made this thread. Posted in this thread.
I am Bach.

I am not sure how I got here. I was programming in basic and for some reason I discovered the AXE manual. It seemed too good to be true at first.

I found Axe and Omni thanks to KinderMoumoute's tut which I found while looking for an ASM tut. I coded stand alone for two years before joining Omni in september.

@Pimath back when I started doing calc stuff, we didn't have that kind of browser feature, sadly, so to find calc sites I just googled calculator games in English and French then found some random personal sites. I didn't realize there was such a large community of programmers online, but I knew that certain people published games online, because I heard about TI-Graph Link software and I found it strange that so many calc games at school were in English. It took me 2 years before joining forums, though, because I only visited calc sites to find ASM libs and games.
