5.9 earthquake in Virginia
« on: August 23, 2011, 04:20:00 pm »
So there was an 5.9 earthquake in Sterling Virginia earlier today. I was wondering how many of our members felt it or after shocks. I was sitting on the couch downstairs watching a movie and suddenly my couch stated shaking. Having never felt an earthquake of any sort I was like wtf? I thought maybe one of our dogs had gotten behind the couch and was bumping it. I really hadn't a clue what the hell was going on. It wasn't major, but it was a bit unnerving. I can't imagine being at the center of one. I'm in N.C. fairly close to the S.C. border.

My aunt felt it. She lives in Virginia and she texted me about it.

It hit Maryland as well, but I didn't feel it when it hit, perhaps because I was in the car at the time.

I didn't feel it right south of Quebec city and apparently in Quebec they didn't either. However I heard that Montreal did.

It amazes me the distance that tremors can travel from the epicenter. It's not like this one was even really strong either. O_o

I felt it. At first I thought it was something at the military base I live close to. (APG does a lot of artillery testing and so forth)

Spoiler For IMPORTANT NEWS!:
Late last night, Quebec was invaded by a group calling themselves, "Omnimaga". Not much is known about these mysterious people except that they all carried calculators of some kind and they all seemed to converge on one house in particular. Experts estimate that the combined power of their fabled calculators is greater than all the worlds super computers put together. The group seems to be holding out in the home of a certain DJ_O, who the Omnimagians claim to be their founder. Such power has put the world at a standstill with everyone waiting to see what the Omnimagians will do...

Wait... This just in, the Omnimagians have sent the UN a list of demands that must be met or else the world will be "submitted to the wrath of Netham45's Lobster Army". Such demands include >9001 crates of peanuts, sacrificial blue lobsters, and a wide assortment of cherry flavored items. With such computing power stored in the hands of such people, we can only hope these demands are met.

In the wake of these events, we can only ask, Why? Why do these people make these demands, what caused them to gather, and what are their future plans...

Yeah I agree. I was surprised Montreal even felt it considering it wasn't even 6.0.

I did not know, and I live in TN.

I was at China for most of the After shocks of the 2008 earthquake though.  It was pretty unnerving, but not that bad.

I didn't feel it in NE Ohio. It's too bad too. I was reading my summer reading book so I totally would have noticed it.

That sucks Yunhua98 x.x. That one was pretty nasty from what I recall. X.x

I personally would hate if we had a 7.0 earthquake or something. I actually live at a place that is at risk of getting one between 6.0-7.0 in the next 30 years or so, apparently, because Charlevoix area that is nearby is a crater caused by a meteorite 200 millions of years ago, and since then they get quite a bunch of earthquakes. The issue though is that even a 6.2 earthquake for example could cause nasty damages in some areas, because a bunch of stuff isn't build as strong as in California, for example.

I didn't feel anything. Apparently they did in NYC and north of me, but idk. My great aunt lives in Virginia Beach and my dad's cousin, since she lives with him, called her from work and she said "There was an earthquake?"

The 5.9 earthquake that occurred is enough to knock things off shelves and shatter windows, so it's already pretty bad.

A perspective in MD - house was rattling, initially thought that someone was banging hard on our door... until things started to fall.
A little statue and some ceramics fell, both which were quite audible. Silly me stayed inside (didn't know that you were supposed to go outside!) :P

All this while doing SAT prep... interesting, eh? :D
