Ambiguously Named Companies
« on: June 19, 2010, 04:40:49 am »
Has anyone noticed that there are a lot of companies out there in the tech sector with really ambiguous names?  I did a quick Google search with some popular prefixes and suffixes and these were the results.  Basically, if there was any doubt as to if there existed a well known professional and legitimate company with the same name (or some other product, service, definition, etc.) on the top 5 entries on the first Google search results page then I did not include it.  I guess it just goes to show you how uncreative people really are.

Yeah I saw that too. It's the same thing over here and has been going on for years.

Also in Quebec, there's an additional trend: All companies that starts with Nor (Nortel, Norbourg, for instance), always seems to be into financial fiascos.

I guess this is all where some calc groups/sites got their ideas from :D (Cemetech, RevSoft, Cahaltech (defunct), CalcSoft (defunct, about 2 teams at least used that name). Some ideas sounds cool, though.

In real life it just gets confusing x.x

Bit late, but wow. Some of them are still doing well, too.

So where did the name "Omnimaga" come from? Doesn't fit any of the categories above (which is a good thing :D).

I believe it had to do with combining Omni and Magic, but I'd ask DJ for the full story. :)

Yeah. Initially I wanted to do with Ultima (Final Fantasy spell) and Magic, but my bro often used Ultimania in stuff he created like small comics and it sounded too similar to Multimania, a hosting service I used back then. Finally I inspired myself from the Omni-slash limit break in FFVII, took the Omni prefix and stuck Maga (inspired from the world magic) at the end.

Also Omnimaga plus its logo (the one in my avatar) were officially created on Sept 1st 2001.

Oh wow someone posted that one on DS forums and did not capitalize anything in the topic title. At first I was like WTF? When I checked Detacheds Solutions off-topic section, then I discovered it was Pen Spinning stuff. I was a bit scared of clicking the link

Lol I remember ExpertSexChange/ExpertsExchange from school (a teacher tolds us about that one). I also remember Cemetech did an april fools joke in 2007 or 2008. All Cemetech affiliates got changed to CodersExchange programming group, with an extremly crappy website that looked like most old Geocities sites, but it looked a bit like CoderSexChange :P

Lol, some of these domains expired. Good thing for them.

It applies to not only companies, but to towns too, for example:

Fucking, Austria (who decided to keep the name after they finally understood the pun after 800 years)
Dildo, Newfoundland, Canada (also helps when the people from Newfoundland are also called Newfies)
Moncuq, France (could be translated to "My ass")

You can add some names such as Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, UK (who was just a publicity stunt) and your world tour is done. Hm, what about silly-named companies taking office in silly-named towns?

Remember the day the walrus started to fly...

I finally cleared my sig after 4 years you're happy now?
