I believe the exam fee is revealed sometime near the beginning of the school year. They don't change much, though. Over the past 5+ years the price per test increased by $3.

My school paid for 4 of mine and the last one was $60 because of some math/science discount. I don't know if that's just my school or everywhere though.

I got a 5 on AP Calculus BC, the only AP test I took (I'm an 8th grader)

I bet that the price is not necessarily for profits and cost coverage as much as it is to discourage people from not trying hard enough and end up failing the same test 3 times.
