Umm...what is the game of life?
« on: March 28, 2010, 05:00:27 am »
Random question (and feel free to move to Randomness if it should be there (sorry if it should be, I'm horribly at where to put some of these things :P)) but what is the Game of Life program included in the Axe downloads? I don't see what it does or anything really or the point...someone explain this please? :P

It's a simulation of cellular automata obeying a specified set of rules. (developed by J.H. Conway, a mathematician)

I took several year before figuring out what it is about. Just the title Game Of Life threw me away. I kept hearing about it on ticalc.org and thought it was some sort of board game that was overly done in their archives (like quadratic solvers), but then I heard about cellular automata and was curious, then saw tr1p1ea's version called CGOL and was finally amazed.

Oh ok. I just thought it was like some Life (like the borad game) game that went horribly wrong and was used for examples of what can happen :P I don't know. But that makes a lot more sense. Thanks.

yeah the issue is that on ticalc.org, as soon as the word "game" is included in your title, you alerady lose reputation in the TI community among the experienced coders that are not very knowledgeable in terms of video games, simply because they will find it unoriginal and most of these games are really poor quality there. Unfortunately, people like those who don't know what Game Of Life is will miss something good x.x

It's the same thing when you include the word "solver", "RPG" (unless it's an RPG adaptation of a popular game franchise, like Super Mario RPG), "Guess"/"Guessing", "Quadratic". Remember that Sudoku solver for the TI-89 that made Ticalc.org front page in January? Well, the first time I saw it in the new files, I did not even bother looking at the info page, because I was convinced it was a quadratic solver. The staff even made a joke reference to quadratic solvers in the news cuz the title is so misleading :P
