I say I need something that's over 100$, and my parents say I will buy it for you but you will have to pay back. Then, when I try to pay back, they say no...

Lol, exactly! I wanted to pay for my new phone and my mom was like "Okay, but you only have to pay half" on our way there, and after we got it, she said "It's your birthday present." How am I supposed to learn the value of a dollar? honestly, I'm a frivolous (right word?) spender

I'm not sure if my parents are aware of my programming stuff or not..
I think my mom might know but she seems to be just kind of neutral about it.

My parents want me to have the best programming experience I can and to follow my passion. They recently agreed to fork over half the cost of a calculator just in case it would make it better for what I love to do. My parents let me compose and play music all the time, and don't make me. They are very supportive of non-conventionality.

Yeah, I always want to buy something and dad says "Wait until your birthday you may get it; I want you to save up for <something big>." Um, I never get it on my brithday, and Dad, I'm only 12 I don't think I need to save up fro a car yet!

Samebull then SirCmpwn and JustCause parents are exceptions. In both cases even when their school activities were not affected at all and they had good grades, parents still disallowed them to code. They just wanted to force their kid into majoring in anything that is not related to electronics. Kinda like in the early 20th century where some families forced their kid to marry with specific people.

In my case my mom was fine with me programming calculator games as long as I did not spend the entire day doing it. She simply wanted me to vary my activities a little, such as spending 2 hours drawing, 1 hour outdoor, 1 hour playing video games and 4 hours coding instead of 8 hours coding, 8 hours drawing or 8 hours playing video games. However a few years later she told me a few times she was amazed at my creativity in reference to my many calc games, despite not understanding how video games works, and liked how I used some of my free time for creative purposes.  I guess it helped that my grades were rather good for my future studies, though. The only time I was grounded for a long while was because I spent too much time online and my internet was cancelled completely until moving out, but at that time I often talked less to my mom due to being online too much or took a while to do my chores, so that probably did not help, although I was past 18 when this happened. X.x
