(I tried sending him a PM and it said it couldn't send because his inbox was full or something so I've had to post a thread on the subject)

Posted from the thread I posted over at SMF forums:
I don't own the website that I'll be discussing, and to be honest, the owner of the website is quite frankly very upset about this at the moment (the site's had a bit of trouble here and there but I don't want to go into it)

But to quote the actual index.html itself:
Quote
Sorry, a forum software upgrade completly destroyed the entire database, forum files and every attempt at fixing the boards as documented on Simplemachines website failed, leading TIMGUL website to be completly irrecoverable. Until the day somebody I trust will be able to help me fixing everything (if I'm still here), TIMGUL is gone. I never got any luck with computer stuff so here's what happen. Since all 900+ song files are encrypted there's no way to recover them either. Sorry.
I'm not one to advertise, but you can find the site here.

..could anyone shed some light as to how this upgrade wiped out the website and how it can apparently be fixed?[/size]
That is impossible. I mean that an update/upgrade will destroy the entire database and forum files. From what version of smf did you upgrade and how did you do it? Did you make a backup of your db prior to the upgrade?
Can't happen. For a start the 1.1.9 upgrade doesn't even edit all the forum files. It doesn't edit the entire database either so it isn't going to "completely destroy" it.

Now it is possible that the automatic pre-upgrade check gave some failed tests and this person just went ahead and ran the upgrade anyway. That could cause some problems but it wont destroy everything and it should be fixable.

It would certainly take some effort to do that. You would have to ignore some warnings....

I would encourage that the member seek assistance anyways...

The database will still be sat there with no changes and nothing lost whatsoever...

make a backup of the forum directory then replace the files with a fresh set from a 1.1.9 package then put settings.php back and make sure to remove install.php.This should get the forum running then worry about addons and themes ect.

I don't know how it wiped the website; like I said, I wasn't the one who installed it. (I don't own the website; I'm an active member on that site but I'm just posting on behalf
I believe the site had ran SMF 2.0 RC1* and from an IRC log a friend gave to me (he's also a member of that forum as well) the site went with "1.19", which I'm guessing is a typo of 1.1.9.

I don't know the technical knowhow of the site, I just know that apparently the forum broke after installing an upgrade and trying the methods that have been suggested here apparently don't work. I've sent the owner a link to this thread so hopefully he'll post his side of the story here; I'm just posting all I know about the issue.

Upgraded from v2 to 1.1.9?

Oh-oh....

So if he was to reupgrade back 2.0, would the site work again?
I'm gonna assume from the "oh-oh.." that was the error.

Look at it logically. Going from v2 to v1.1.9 was hardly an upgrade.

That's like upgrading XP with Windows 95.

Reinstalling v2 MIGHT work, but I'd wait for better guidance than I can give you, I'm afraid.

If you're still there, that may be your answer.

Mhmm... this was a 2.0 RC1 to 2.0 RC1.1 upgrade, not a 2.0 RC1 to 1.1.9. I guess it was confusing since this forum uses 1.1.9 (since I don't feel like redoing the skin from scratch and most mods would no longer work), but TIMGUL used 2.0 RC1. The upgrade killed the board and everything, as described in the message at http://www.mtv-music-generator.com

TO be fair, though, I pretty much gave up on computer stuff. I just don't have it, so unless someone fixes TIMGUL for me (if it's even possible), TIMGUL is gone

I seriously hope this shit won't happen ever at Omnimaga and I am glad this site stuck with 1.19. I just hope they will not drop SMF 1.1x support in the near future like PHPBB did with PHPBB2

TO be fair idk if I feel like bothering posting at all about the problem on SMF. They give awesome support but they are too technical and I barely understand anything they say

Well, maybe a different forum software could be used instead? A forum I go on uses a package called FluxBB. Currently there's no way of converting from SMF to FluxBB, but it's a start.
Heck, I made a "unofficial backup" of TIMGUL back in March on ProBoards' server; you're more than welcome to help build that up.

Wow some people are really asshole and not caring about the work put in communities built for them: http://timgul.freeforums.org/post749.html#p749 . On top Netham45 spent time trying to restore the database of the old site (even thought it's old)

This Lyricist asshole should consider himself lucky I even started a MTV Music Generator site in the first place in 2007. Would he have got the idea of starting one if I didn't?

I dunno if that was rhetorical. But i think Shellshaka has a good point. And, i also don't get why Lyricist was.. reacting to the good news of TIMGUL being brought back up. Users would just use both of them. maybe one more then the other, But it shouldn't kill either one of the sites.

Because he's afraid his site will get less active.
