Me and Religion
« on: May 01, 2006, 03:12:00 pm »
Back when I was in high school, around the age of 16 I found myself somewhat religious. Over the years following I found myself trying to find where I stand with God. I soon became more involved with having a relationship with God, and this was due to the help of some fellow friends. I started to like the one girl that was helping me become more spiritual, and thus developing a relationship with God. Soon I became less involved with the bible study group which I attended, and soon after that I left the group.

I was in marching band when I was involved in the group, being in 11th grade. Now I went into the 12th grade, now not being in marching band, I found myself still thinking I was spiritual. After high school I started to go to college, and later found myself going to a bible study group with someone I knew. It seemed to not be my kind of thing, as the person (an adult, very active in a church) leading the study seemed to be very biased. I thought this was rather un-Christan like and found myself quiting the group.

Over time I prayed less and less, but during April it became a all time low. Now I seemed to not have a faith, not believing in any form of a higher power. Recently I started to mock certain preachers on t.v. (Jim Baker), as he used to be a crook who was once in jail for quite some time. I considered him a thief and that he was just trying to sell religious items on t.v. Over the past week I started to pray, asking for any sign of a higher power. I have done this a few times over the week, and haven't seen or thought of anything that would pertain to there being a higher power.

Now the whole reason I decided to talk about this is that I am considering doing something I never really have done before. No not killing myself or hurting myself in anyway, but that of fasting. Fasting is taking something out of your life to bring yourself to a better relationship with a God of a religion. I am trying to see if I should go through with doing a fast for up to 3 days, and praying for any kind of sign. I still see there being no God atm or form of a higher power, but I am willing to give it one last shot.

What I ask of you is not to flame, but if you would like to share your opinions go right ahead. I am thinking of starting this on Monday of next week. Not eating solids or liquids for a few days, just drinking water and praying.

Just remember: You can't make god revelate himself...

I too hvae no "proof" that something higher exists, just personal experiences that make me think "how high were the chances to get out there alive?" and the wonder of life and nature...

I myself fast ever year before easter for 40 days, not everything of course but rather something special. This year it was sweets and all kinds of snacks I fasted.

Just me thoughts...

You mean for lent? A couple years ago I gave up soda for God, back when I had more faith. I haven't drank any soda since Dec 26, 2004

Sounds like an interesting thing to do. But don't put too much faith into your hopes, so the effects it'll have on you if nothing happens is worse.

My stance on the existence of higher powers is unclear most of the time, but recently it has been solidifying into a 'yes.'
One of these days I'll get a sig I'm really proud of.

 U gave it up permanently?

I don't fast to get some sort of enlightenment, but rather conciously deny myself something to experience other things on a more intense basis...

I myself am of the opinion that god is everywhere... in what we do, feel, hear, taste and see. Sharpening your senses makes it more easier to feel some kind of connection to the outer world, including god. A gap was created between men and god when the first sin ocurred, why not try mending that gap at least a bit?

I may be catholic, but I don't see things that narrow... I don't think the pope's infallible, for example... that's just made-up bullshit

I was religous for a time, and according to all popular belif still am to a point. I belive in a slightly higher power when it is needed, but as science becomes more and more advanced I find that this higher power isn't needed to explain anyhting.

And fasting for 3 days sounds like a great idea! (especially when you choose to do it) go ahead! Have fun! Don't pass out! and keep it under 5 days please, because I fasted for 7 days and had to be rushed to the hospital.

Now, I am a solid Catholic and I see God's response to all my prayers, however I must point out one thing:
