Basically you scale it around without supersampling then paste a texture (something like a halfway-transparent square with opaque corners) over it (ctrl+; ftw), play with the opacity until you like it.

* shmibs increased saturation and contrast, used gimp's pixelising blur (5*5), added another layer, flood filled it with a 5*5 square texture with a transparent back and a black line along the bottom and right, merged that down, and then did a 2 pixel gaussian blur.
