What I wonder is if Windows 8.1 for desktops really brings back the Windows 7 style start menu?

It doesn't open a proper menu afaict, it leads to the tiles screen :/

Kind of ot, but what's up with this flatness trend in graphic design lately? Here we are in the 21st century.. and we're making bright, loudly-colored interfaces that look like 3.1 themes without bevels or something. Edges and corners seem to mostly be aliased.
There's even gtk themes picking up on it :P

well, i, for one, welcome it if it means more good flat themes for gtk. making things flat really helps for saving space, because tiling wms like this look gross otherwise.

You could also use something different than gedit for developpment, like emacs or vim. You will earn a lot more space.

I meant how in Windows 8, instead of the Windows 95 or XP start menu, a new page appears with tiles like on a smartphone. Windows 8 got many negative criticism due to that because many people have been used to the original menu for 15 years and are not willing to have to get used to something new or saw the forced change pointless.

Not too sure, but maybe 3D stuff is seen as a bit too fancy nowadays and they're slowly trying to head back to Atari 2600 style GUIs. That said, I don't think Omni would look too bad if gradients were removed and replaced with a two-color thing, as long as the right color scheme was used.

It could be worse, though. To continue Darl's discussion about GUIs that gets simpler and simpler, maybe the following is the future of desktop OS design? :P

Spoiler For IMPORTANT NEWS!:
Late last night, Quebec was invaded by a group calling themselves, "Omnimaga". Not much is known about these mysterious people except that they all carried calculators of some kind and they all seemed to converge on one house in particular. Experts estimate that the combined power of their fabled calculators is greater than all the worlds super computers put together. The group seems to be holding out in the home of a certain DJ_O, who the Omnimagians claim to be their founder. Such power has put the world at a standstill with everyone waiting to see what the Omnimagians will do...

Wait... This just in, the Omnimagians have sent the UN a list of demands that must be met or else the world will be "submitted to the wrath of Netham45's Lobster Army". Such demands include >9001 crates of peanuts, sacrificial blue lobsters, and a wide assortment of cherry flavored items. With such computing power stored in the hands of such people, we can only hope these demands are met.

In the wake of these events, we can only ask, Why? Why do these people make these demands, what caused them to gather, and what are their future plans...

No, that's Windows 9.
All versions after that will be completely nonfunctional (continuing the trend of Windows).
For example, Windows 10 will look like this:

I wonder what the fate of Windows 11 would be.
Due to dissatisfaction, I will be inactive on Omnimaga until further notice. (?? THP hasn't been much success and there's also the CE. I might possibly be here for a while.)
If you want to implore me to come back, or otherwise contact me, I can be found on GitHub (bluebear94), Twitter (@melranosF_), Reddit (/u/Fluffy8x), or e-mail (if you know my address). As a last resort, send me a PM on Cemetech (bluebear94) or join Touhou Prono (don't be fooled by the name). I've also enabled notifications for PMs on Omnimaga, but I don't advise using that since I might be banned.
