Yeah, 18 next year.
I'm going to have xp on one side with 25% of the HD and some flavour of Unix on the other with the rest. Any suggestions on which I should get?

Hm, why not 7? For the UNIX, I could suggest Linux Mint (if you are n00b at Linux) or Ubuntu. Arch could be a good choice too.

I would suggest 7 too if it's a good computer. Don't get Vista. XP is nice too, but I wouldn,t be surprised if MS stopped providing security updates soon. For 7 just be warned you may have driver issues to cope with if you get the 64 bit version. I myself had some before TI-Nspire Link Software was updated for Windows 7

Well I would get 7 but my brother has a xp disk and it's only a single core computer. What's the difference between Linux mint, ubuntu and arch btw? And I am kind of a unix newbie, but I learn fast at that kind of thing.

Oh ok, if you had a 7 disk thenyou might have been able to run it fine with special effects disabled, but now go for XP I guess. For Linux you better ask Miotatsu, Will_W, Juju or Tribal since they're Linux users.

hmm, I can try to answer (someone will have to confirm probably though). anyways, I'm running mint atm, basiclly I've heard people say that it is just debian with extra features pre loaded. Arch starts at the bare minimum (command prompt) and you install only the packages you want and build your own personalized OS. ubuntu, no idea. Sorry if I'm completly wrong (very well could be)

well player hit mint right on
for arch it literally starts as a core os with enough to load ethernet drivers and run pacman to get you adding you own packages and literally build a fully customized os from the internals up (if you choose are you only need about 6 gigs for it to live happily but 8 is recommanded for storage) me tribal juju and a few others can help you if you choose that
ubuntu is basically like mint it comes preloaded with a ton of app and a easy to use gui its probally the most users freindly linux os with decent support the only thing i have to say about it is it comes a bit bloated with software you may never use
the question here really is how big is the harddrive ?

In fact, Ubuntu is the easy to use and popular distro that everyone uses (who is based on Debian) and Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu and comes preloaded with the proprietary software (such as Flash Player, which doesn't come with Ubuntu) so that everything works out of the box. I don't use Mint, but I know people who says that Mint is better than Ubuntu...
Arch Linux comes with only pacman and the bare minimum to make a system usable, so you have to install everything manually, if you feel adventurous. It works with a rolling release system, so you always have the last version of everything.

hmm, well I kind of like not having to work too hard, but I also like being able to fully create the operating system with arch...so it's a hard choice...

To configure Arch, you just follow the tutorial found on the website step-by-step and you're done
Also, don't try Gentoo.

actually i didnt have to touch it
cause i went with vesa if your gfx card is suported it will go on like no problem and auto configure which is very nice
after you install the drivers for it else it will also default to vesa which is just a generic driver
