One thing I dislike about the Linux word is how in many cases, application tutorials or readmes for Linux native apps (even their Windows/Mac versions) are written in cryptic ways that makes you even more confused at it. It's like if the people who wrote those help files are singling out people with less experience with computers. People encourage others to switch to Linux but don't help them at all and force them to rely on help forums to search for their questions (or ask). I don't know how Linux distros themselves are, but I know apps like Irssi had very cryptic help files when I last checked.
Btw, do you guys think a 80 GB harddrive would be enough to fit Mint and Windows XP? Do I need a special harddrive to be able to partition it and is partitioning hard and dangerous for the average Windows user who don't venture into low-level stuff?
Btw I always found Mac Os to be more user friendly than Windows. Even apps made for it seemed to have more user-friendly controls, like Photoshop. I loved Photoshop for Mac, but I despise the Windows version, especially how Zooming in an image won't increase the window size like in Photofiltre Studio. But Mac is so friggin expensive for what it offers and its variety of softwares is still not any better than Linux. Just that would make me never go back to Mac Os again. Also Mac Os 9.2 is terrible in terms of stability.

well depending on the linux os which you chose mint i would say thats more than enough although i have never used mint it supposedly not that large as well
the only problem i have had with partitioning is not defragging first and making sure what im partitioning is all free space making windows freak at next boot cause files were moved and other stupid things like that. i think we all would suggest gparted for partitioning which has a nice gui and is relatively easy to use as long as you understand the words it has on it
(like logical partition primary ect)
and no any harddrive/stargae device can be partitioned from a hdd to a sd card so no special hdd needed
and agreed a lot of linux apps have not great documentation but i have also seen the many apps that have had better documentation than windows/mac so i guess it luck of the draw X.x

is defragmenting needed if you format your harddrive first? Also in which order both OSes should be installed?
Btw I'm not going into linux now, but I am asking in case, because eventually I had plans to load Linux on my old PC, but would still like to be able to use Windows XP on it too, since some old apps will not work on Seven (and my version of Seven doesn't support Virtual PC)

Yeah, gparted have a nice GUI and is very straightforward, it even moves and defrags the files your NTFS partition to make sure no data would be overwritten during the resize of the partitions.
And on my computer with 80GB of space I fitted 4 operating systems on it (WfW3.11 and Win7 on the 1st 40GB drive, Ubuntu and Arch on the 2nd 30GB and a separate /home partition on the last 15GB), so it's not a problem. Linux is always happy with 10GB.
Also, it's advised to install Windows first to let the linux installer install its bootloader properly instead of the ugly Windows BOOTMGR. GRUB2 shows you a nice menu (you can even set a background image!) when booting your PC, it's fun.
And RTFM

well as I mentionned in my posts sometimes even RTFMing won't help, because a lot are written in cryptic ways that only tech-savy users can understand. In some cases, when I ask for help afterward, people are even more cryptic, making me even more confused
. Oh well, hopefully maybe it should be different this time, and since I got two PC, I can always hop on IRC at night if I need help.
Also i checked and my harddrive is NTFS so I should be good. I feared it was an older format or something.

Windows for Workgroups 3.11. (Yeah, I have that.
) On top of a stripped down MS-DOS 6 installation who were already there when I bought the computer.
Also, Linux should recognize both NTFS and ext4 while Windows should see only its own partition. And yeah, it's better to ask on IRC, it's way better than these cryptics manuals you would need a Ph. D. to read that.

yup meaning you can use linux to work on files on your windows partition but nit the other way around so files you want on windows and linux must be on the ntfs partition or a seprate fat32/ntfs partiton in a shared partition 9kinda pointless but i have done it just to keep organized

A doctor has a Ph. D, so any doctor. It's kind of the highest level you can get in any field (other then in your job)

Strange, over here we don,t use that in french. If we talk about someone's level in terms of studies, we just say the person got a diploma in medecine at university, or if we want to be more in details, we say he got a "doctorat" diploma in medecine. In Uni, the lowest level is baccalauréat, second level maîtrise and third level doctorat. We rarely ever refer to a doctorat diploma owner as "doctor" because everyone misinterprets it as the person who work in a hospital (technically, in french, doctor is medecin, but in our local slang we always say doctor)

* mapar007 goes back on the topic of OS selection
I use Fedora 10, it's nice, and it runs really smoothly even on my crappy 10y-old machine.

Is fedora user-friendly for someone with little experience with computers? I would probably want to start with something that is.
