Title: retartedly slow bootup time
Post by: Snake X on January 23, 2012, 03:50:04 pm
I don't get it. I just don't get it. I have a computer with an i5-2500k processor and a GTX460 hawk, yet my bootup time for windows is really dumb. I can't figure out why its this slow. mIRC joining is slow, msn loggin is slow, chrome is slow loading flash at first (sometimes even crashing), steam was slow loading at first, etc. I don't understand why its like this, unless its the amount of start-up programs i have (about 8 ). Even steam won't start up on boot anymore and msn won't automatically sign in on startup like it should and it used to but its not now.  ???

I have avast (one of the start-up programs) that does real-time scanning (internet security edition)

edit: its slow sometimes showing the update pop-up and the "Ding" that goes along with it

Does it just take like 2 minutes for those programs to startup or do they just not startup at all even after 30 minutes? From experience, slow boot/startup is due to either your computer being overcrowded with startup processes (for example, HP Printer update, Adobe update, Avast update, iTunes updates, etc) or it has undetectable viruses and stuff.

My old computer took 30 seconds to startup on XP when I got it and after its reformat, but a few months ago it took about 20 minutes.

well, if i were you i would let some virusscanner scan your whole computer first, just to be sure, you can use avg free edition (http://free.avg.com/ww-en/homepage), it works fine..

2 minutes for the programs to start up minus 2 programs (steam and one called "chatango message catcher" (its a light program)).

edit: I have used ccleaner and defraged my HDD (only once tho)

CCleaner doesn't do the job that much. I tried it before and it improved my startup time, but only by about 10%.

I was thinking about buying an SSD to get rid of this problem, do you think it would b worth it?

Not sure. If you have viruses or something, I doubt your computer will get any faster.

yeah. The downside thing to all this tho is that 6 out of 8 of these programs are tools for my hardware (ex: Realtek HD manager, NVIDIA settings, acer edisplay management, etc)

Check Task Manager for anything that seems to be eating up resources. Could help. :)

Also, what version of Windows?

Ok, are you running on an HP computer with that stupid Dock? If so it sucks up resources, disable it.
