Title: So what is everyone up to?
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 16, 2011, 11:21:09 pm
I noticed that last week there was a giant (and unusually high) spike in forum activity but as weekend arrived it went like poof, like if all of a sudden lots of people could no longer access Omni altogether, although there are still a lots of guests online (and traffic) for some reasons.

Is it because people are busier this week and decided to spend all their time on the forums last week, is it that some people went inactive because the spam section is temporarily gone, is the OmnomIRC update an issue preventing people to post, is it the weather or are we expecting more progress on some calc projects soon? I'm curious what is everyone up to, since last year even at this time of the year a lot of people were still around, but I did see years where everyone was quiet right now but this year seemed weird as it went from an unusually high activity straight to about 3 times lower than last year O.O. Yesterday I can understand since the majority of our French users were on TCAP voice-chatting, but today was kinda weird since last year Sundays were usually the busiest days. Even Cemetech seems kinda quiet since the past few days.

I myself ended up on a weird schedule last week and next week and as a result I work 6 evening shifts in a row, add to that a daytime shift friday in addition to my evening one that day, so I had time to catch up on some updates last week, but then I got pretty busy and needed more sleep, so less posting from me D:

I'm a bit busy too, and I think we all are, especially those of us still in school.
Spoiler For Spoiler:
Three contest entries, ten active webapp projects, six AP classes, Model UN, founding a club, applying for a job, studying for the PSAT and two SAT IIs, and they tell me college/real life is gonna be worse D:
EDIT: /me loves the new D: smiley ;D

Working night shift at Rona (http://rona.ca). Sleeping. Checking the forums for posts. Doing some background admin stuff. etc.

Yeah I like it to. Actually when does PSAT/SAT usualy occurs? I remember some people were talking about it in September or so, but is it supposed to be fixed in October or can it be anywhere in the first semester?  Also how do you work on 3 contest entries at once? O.o

Also yeah TCAP yesterday brought our French users there so that can be understood. I was more wondering about today, though, since Sundays used to be the busiest days last year. I also appended stats for about 10 days every year in my first post so you can compare. Last year it remained consistent, while this year it goes from higher to much lower.

Eeems: They have Rona outside Quebec? O.o

I haven't noticed any decrease in my own activity. For some reason right now I'm being drawn towards making a decent editor for BBC Basic.

PSAT is always in October; SATs are throughout the year. As for the contest entries, I'm translating my readme.txt for Reversi little by little into French, a language I hardly know (I really shouldn't have made the English one so long lol), and I'm actively working on Madness and a secret entry for the Axe/xBASIC portion of zContest :D

I'm working on homework, school projects, Minecraft, and sleep. Mostly the projects part. I've also been planning a tutorial that I may decide to write when my schedule clears up.

That seems nice Deep Thought and Willrandship. I hope you eventually announce updates on the forums once you got a lot done (assuming you didn't do so already).

Also that reminds me, does anyone think it would be a waste of time to convert my old grayscale tutorial to BBCode for the tutorials section? It's very outdated and the english isn't very good, but now that DoorsCS has Omnicalc compatibility maybe some people could still find it useful?

I'm really busy with marching band (I play the snare drum), but that ends in two weeks, so I should be getting around to posting here more in the next couple of weeks. Also, I'm having problems with high school relationships (bleargh) (girls and stuff) and am seriously lacking motivation to keep going with PaintPad and Base 671. Also, my link cord (calc-to-calc, not calc-to-comp) broke, so I can't test anything for Base 671 if I'm making that into a two player game, which I really want to. Add to that a regular workload for school, I'm getting a job soon, and my piano lessons teacher wants me to get more serious and I don't really want to, piano's just a hobby for me.

FML.

EDIT: I forgot to mention problems with restrictive parents, grounding me for (what seems to me) no good reason, and also they blocked Omnimaga. So yeah. And a plethora of other things. Not to say, I'm so screwed, pity me, but yeah...that's why my activity has decreased a bit.

That sucks they blocked Omni. I hope they won't end up being like SirCmpwn parents. X.x

I'm trying to catch up on new and recent posts, although for some reasons I've been feeling kinda weak at times lately or had lots of headaches.

Anything that is not technology-related. At first I thought it was because his parents hated anything electronic-related with a passion because they were born without them and hate changes, but the irony is that they also work on computer stuff. I think his parents just didn't like him.

Anyway nice to see you again, it sucks you had to leave Omni D:. You should post about your project you showed on IRC eventually. :)

-college apps HOORAY. But I suspect my activity is going to skyrocket past January 2012 to compensate.
-dealing with the two hardest classes in the school (AP English literature with the most insane teacher, and AP spanish lit; it's the same thing but in spanish :D)
-swimming 3 hrs/day

In other news I'm officially an Eagle Scout yay! (Another reason I haven't been on much; I passed my board of review last night ;D)

Gravity Guy updates are slow, I keep daydreaming about Ash:Phoenix instead during physics which is bad because I need to pay attention in that class :( and because whenever I run simulatneous projects one of them gets severely negatively affected-- I don't want to lose Gravity Guy's release -_-

You should check the projects section, as there's a thread containing ideas actually. Hopefully you can find something there. :D

Also @Squidgetx that seems quite hectic. X.x I remember when running 4 miles I was almost completely exhausted, now I can't imagine how hard it must be to swim it.

If by that you mean events, I swim distance breast, and everything free. In the summer, we would do about 2 hours 30 minutes in the morning, dryland in the afternoon, and another hour and a half. Speaking of instruments, I play two also!

Wow, that's pretty intense. O.O I ask cause I'm joining a gym with a pool soon. I'd like to incorporate some swimming in with the weight lifting I'm going to be doing. I jog 3-4 miles five days a week (right now), but I don't now how well I'd do trying to swim that amount. x.x

this past week was the most hectic thing, what with three tests (it was listed as 5, and i showed up at the testing centre every time, but apparently our math teacher made some very big mistakes with scheduling things), two essays, 2 weeks worth of homework (again, because of our math teacher's messed up scheduling), going to see my parents, dealing with interpersonal 'issues,' and having both my external hard drive be corrupted (because i accidentally disconnected it at an inopportune moment) and then my internal one as well (in trying to fix the external one X|). things have cooled down a bit now though. i'm probably going to spend winter break at my parent's house, so that will either mean all the activity in the zoo, or none at all, depending on whether or not i have a proxy to work with.

Ouch sorry to hear. I guess that explains why you haven't been around as much? I hope the interpersonal issues aren't anything as bad as when you still lived at your home though. Also personally you are 18 and if your parents tries to prevent you from visiting your favorite (legal) sites when you go at their home, then you should probably not even bother visiting them (or at least not stay there). Maybe stay where you are or something, idk.

I've been kinda busy lately. Calculus doesn't always agree with me (had a big test today, hoping I can hang onto my C), and college apps are draining.
Also, I have 2 SAT Subject Tests on Saturday, so I have to relearn a whole year's worth of Chemistry in about 3-4 days. Yippee. :P The Math test shouldn't be a problem, hopefully.

I've been sorta working on my projects, but not as much as I would like. Once I'm through the Subject Tests (provided I do OK on the Chemistry one), that'll hopefully change.

Oh, and I earned my Eagle Scout rank back in September, I just kept forgetting to post about it.

I should probably start studying for Chemistry instead of lurking right now... *sigh*

I've been working on a science experiment.  I got eaten alive by my test subjects (I could swear they're still hiding somewhere in my house), and I ended up having to create a multivariabled linear regression model with one hand while applying itch cream with the other.  That's all I've been up to.

Bump:

So what is everyone up to this Summer? Do you have any calc or non-calc projects planned? Will you go to a trip somewhere? Will you be around, more active or less active?

In my case I am not as active lately due to the Summer Festival and work schedule. The concerts so far were fun, though, except the first which wasn't really my genre, but the 3 others I went to so far were pretty epic and I plan to go to the one tomorrow and maybe Saturday too. However, travelling back home after the shows can be an hassle due to the massive waiting line that can form at the ferry or in Juju's case, the bus stop, and the walk back home afterward. However it's fun. :D

I also had one week of vacation a few weeks before and will have two more in a week, so hopefully I'll be a little more active then. Calc projects and music will depend of health (neck/back pain can make it hard to concentrate >.<)

I might also try to go to the water park next week or during my vacations.

There is another festival in August, but thankfully there is a special public transit schedule for the event so I can get back home earlier.

Taking a concentrated-schedule stats class over the summer, such endless fun :D

In all seriousness the stress of that +family stuff is kind of enough to shut out hobbies etc.. Tho there isn't class on fridays so I'm actually able to catch up w/ other aspects of life around then.

I think there's ~3-4 weeks left, after that I should be back in business ;)

For the past few weeks, I have been at work, but since the hours aren't too extreme, I have a lot of time to do hobbies, collect calcs, etc. This week, I am off because neither of my bosses will be at workI am mostly working on my computer in my house, but I doubt that I will be able to keep that up for long, because I have a family vacation starting next week, and I'm going hiking in New Mexico the following two weeks. After that, I should be back to working and having time to do stuff.

As DJ said, I'm going to the summer festival, tons of nice music shows, Guns N' Roses tomorrow, will probably be epic if Axl Rose won't be too drunk lol. And right now I'm fixing my old computer, trying to figure out how to upgrade the CPU and stuff.

I have plenty of free time, now that it's summer. Last month, I went to camp for four days, as well as to New York for a week. But now, basically all I have for the summer is the preparation for a class next year, Minecraft, reading for school (finished The Grapes of Wrath today), and of course, calculators. I'm slowly progressing on my two-week-old calc project.

Recently, I've been planning out an RTS game with some of the members of my game dev club. I'm excited for this to come to fruition, since we have a really unique idea for it.

I've also started looking at learning Haskell and Clojure to get exposed to other programming paradigms.

I haven't worked on libti*/gfm/tilp for several weeks.
I've worked a bit on nLaunchy, but I need to rework, as Excale rewrote the Makefile entirely in the meantime.

And lately, I've been working on further improving PatrickD's TI-68k emulator written in JS:
* making it possible to boot up AMS 2.xx;
* nearly doubling the emulation speed by rewriting the emulation of movem (load multiple / store multiple) instructions, but the emulator remains slower than real hardware on recent computers running Firefox Nightly (Chrome is faster);
* making it possible to transfer files to AMS (tested on 2.09).
In addition to this, Adriweb contributed some support for screenshots :)
Multiple important items (Flash memory support, transferring files from the calculator, somehow reducing the frequent emulator hangs triggered by user clicks or keypresses, and more) remain to be done for the emulator to become a reasonably generic, mildly accurate TI-68k emulator - and those items will slow down emulation, which in turn will require more optimization...
In this day and age, high accuracy emulation of the HW2+ protections costs lots of CPU time, it is of very little use to non-developer users, there are hardly any developers anymore, and tiosmod+amspatch strips them out anyway - it follows that as far as I'm concerned, implementing those silly "protections" is a waste of time.

I'm not able to complete the todo list for the emulator by myself - contributions needed, especially on the Web development front ;)

also i recently got myself a nice ti86, which i'm very happy about cause they're quite rare here in germany. so i'll be playing around with that. interestingly, despite not having batteries in it for a week, it still came with a preinstalled shell and a ton of games and utils... nice. have to check if there is any rare stuff on there.

What about when he stops summer class? I assume you still have to take care of him all day long? x.x (unless he goes to his dad's)?

Anyway vacations soon (Sunday). Hoping for a waterpark trip Sunday or Tuesday. Was supposed to be Wednesday this week, but my bro couldn't come and there was a severe thunderstorm watch all day long. I actually wouldn't have minded if they only forecasted rain showers through daytime, because it was 35°C/95°F (with an heat index of 48°C/119°F) and on rainy days the waiting lines are shorter, but when there is lightning they close down pools and water slides and you have to wait.

actually what would be cool is if they changed the color palette of maps and replaced the NPC sprites to match MLP. Same for music, although that's harder. I believe someone made a MLP hack of an Atari 2600 game once too but I think it involved killing and avoiding ponies, IIRC.

Well, Kamelot (who made Golden Sun RPG series for the GBA) once sent a cease and desist letter to Tenniskid493, who was Omni staff, forcing him to rename and edit his TI-83+ Golden Sun clone by removing any trace of the content. This happened with Space Station Pheta on Revsoft and in 1998 with Monopoly 83, but the latter two could eventually be put back online after their respective authors worked an agreement with the respective companies.

It depends of the company and who runs them at the time. Valve, for example, allows any Portal clone as long as they are free.

The world hardly knows about us. I was programming some Lua (on my secret project!) while on the train the other day, one of my friends noticed the long bytes for images and asked can't you just embed the image into the Lua program. I had no other explanation as he thought I was coding for PC so I told him it was for calculator, at the same time bringing up the kArmTI emulator. He mostly had no idea what I was really doing,

How would an MLP game work without the ponies. Actually I remember on the inside cover of one of my really old CD-ROM games there was an assortment of game covers including one of MLP, though the ponies looked quite different.

It would definitively be weird to see a MLP calc game by bronies that lacks any of the main chars of generation 4. One thing I wonder, though, is if you could do like Final Fantasy 1 and 3 for the NES and just give the chars no name (let the user name the char) but try to make them look 90% similar to the show and replace Equestria by The World or something?

One sports game in particular didn't include a single player name because they were not allowed to, so only their numbers and positions were used.

Another example is the Journey to Silius game for the NES, which is a Terminator game but couldn't use the name due to not being able to use the license.

True, but even then, it's best to ensure that the game can easily be modified if they ever notice. For example, that Golden Sun: The Chosen One game that got C&D'ed on Omni was renamed to The Chosen One and the char/dungeons renamed, but he didn't have to delete any trace of the game like that one Chrono Trigger 3D remake a that some people planned to release a few years ago.

If there ever is a time to get into Total War, now is definitely it. Rome II: Total War is releasing in September. There's very high expectations for it, since the original Rome: Total War is perhaps the most popular in the series. (Despite all the best mods being for Medieval II and Empire/Napoleon Total Wars)

Ok so he only had to change names ? It seems fair to me since a calc game can only use original graphics anyway due to the nature of the screen (color calcs and Nspire classic aside).

The last of the two 61 buses heading there is at 9:15 AM. In order to catch it, I had to catch the 7:15 AM L-2 bus and the 87 at 8 AM. I could have taken a gamble and leave for the 7:30 AM L-2 and the 8:15 AM 87 instead, but at this hour there is sometime a lot of traffic, so I could have missed the 61. I finally ended up catching the 7:45 AM 87 because it was a few minutes late and there ended up being almost no traffic, so I arrived 35 minutes earlier than supposed at the 61 bus stop. >.<

On top of that this was 3 different bus transit services, meaning whoever lacks a pass had to spend $19 total for the day >.<. At least it's cheaper than the L-2>77>Cab trick, though.

Pretty safe actually, bad events being rare and mostly very late at night. Montreal-Nord and Toronto are kinda dangerous at night, though.

Yeah Omni was lagging like mad for me for a few minutes. Page wouldn't respond after posting so I closed the tab then pasted my post again in a new one. A minute later both posts sent x.x

I might make a little games system like jimbauwen did, but with a PIC instead of an Arduino.

Although there have been quite a lot of activity in the last week or so, it would be cool to revive this too to share what each of us have been up to lately. For example, what projects have you worked on lately (except secret ones of course), important life accomplishments, non-calc stuff and perhaps if you have any plans in the near future for calcs.

In my case:
Calcs and related:
-Planning stages: secret project that might become either a puzzle or action platformer. HP Prime, although perhaps derivated work might come out of it depending of how things go.
-Need to resume Supersonic Ball for that same calculator
-I had in mind to move Reuben Quest 1+2 Color over to the HP Prime instead of the CSE, because xLIBC is too limited for my needs when it comes to size of map data.
-Perhaps revive the dual-layer RPG Demo and attempt to create a very small pure BASIC RPG for the 84+ for people who like long RPGs but prefer smaller file sizes.
-More other secret projects

Music:
-New happy hardcore/rave album (In UK Hardcore and Dance we Trust)
-3rd power metal album, which might either be a remake of Enter the Dream World, a standalone album with new tracks (I got three plus two in the works) or both combined
-Move my albums to a different, one-time fee digital distribution service. Reverbnation's yearly fees were becoming unsustainable.

Life:
-Get an Xbox One and Halo Master Chief Collection. I still need to save some more money to ensure my finances are safe for such purchase (for example if unpredictable events such as the fridge going kaputt happened just after the purchase).

I've been very busy lately programming a raspberry pi to detect people in a room and point a fan at them (as a school project)

And calc-wise, I started messing with 3D collisions stuff again. I'm not telling yet what I'm going to do with them, but if it works it'll be at least as awesome as my previous 3D collision demo  ;)

I have been working on the port for Abandoned, some of you know it as Starblaze.

I'm also trying to figure out which of all the different projects I am going to work on in my gap year before going off to PLU...

For me:
- School
- Flash animation (it's about Pinkie Pie!)
- Random stuff
- One (1) secret project I bet you'll like. Or not. Depends. Won't tell ya more.
- Even more school

So yeah, I'll be pretty busy those days because of all those stuff, so if you don't see me here, don't worry, I'm still alive and I'll come back real soon...
