Hurricane Irene

So after all the media coverage Hurricane Irene got, was it really bad on the East Coast? I'm curious since I think some people here live there. As for us it was a tropical storm when it hit us, the only kind of damage we got were broken trees south of the province, minor floods near rivers and maybe some buildings got a bit of damage, that's all. We got heavy rain between 3 and 11 PM and now it's raining moderately, and lots of wind gusts, but nothing nasty. What sucked though was that I had to work outdoor from 3:15 PM to 5 PM then again from 6:30 PM to 7:15 PM. X.x
EDIT: That's about the worst it got over here, although during afternoon around 4 PM winds got weaker than in this video I found. It was a bit worse during evening, though, especially between 7 and 9 PM

Another video I found on Youtube (near the ferry)
. At the same time as the storm there was a great tide. It was a close call for sure!
(It kinda reminds me one of the snowstorm we had one year actually, except with rain)

Indeed. The way they were talking it sounded like Manhattan was going to become Venice II or like in the movie called The Day After Tomorrow and that about a million of people would die. I expected flooding, but not too bad either.
I guess maybe it is also because New York is not used to hurricanes like people in Florida, although even then there seemed to be way too much hype about it. Over here at first it was a bit similar to a lower scale. Medias were like if Quebec would get hit by an actual hurricane. Usually those storms weaken after making landfall (I think the last category 1 hurricane to hit Quebec was in the '50s). I never saw this much rain before, though, even when we got the remnants of Katrina. Also in Quebec we're very used to strong winds during snowstorms or flooding during Spring and Fall, so if an actual hurricane was to hit, I'm sure we would be fine.
However is it me or was that hurricane really big? It was pretty weak but it seemed rather huge on the radar maps.

Where I live we had no power since 5-6PM yesterday. Of course, pretty much same weather as DJ_O explained in his posts above. I woke up at 7AM and still no power in the west of the town. Not even phone, so I had no idea if my school was closed or not. So I decided to go to my school in the east, closer to where DJ_O lives, to see if they still have power, learned that my school closed until 12PM. Luckily they still have power, so I thought it was better going here than to be home doing absolutely nothing. Also nice to see you had power since midnight, DJ_O.

I think the reason it got so much coverage was because that high up the coast never gets Hurricanes. Also it was predicted to be a category 3 around the Delmarva area. (Delmarva = Delaware, Maryland, Virginia for those that don't know) But it dropped to a category 1 after it hit North Carolina.
Where I live it knocked down a lot of trees and we were without power from 2:45 AM that night to this morning around 8:00 AM.

IMPORTANT NEWS!
:
Late last night, Quebec was invaded by a group calling themselves, "Omnimaga". Not much is known about these mysterious people except that they all carried calculators of some kind and they all seemed to converge on one house in particular. Experts estimate that the combined power of their fabled calculators is greater than all the worlds super computers put together. The group seems to be holding out in the home of a certain DJ_O, who the Omnimagians claim to be their founder. Such power has put the world at a standstill with everyone waiting to see what the Omnimagians will do...
Wait... This just in, the Omnimagians have sent the UN a list of demands that must be met or else the world will be "submitted to the wrath of Netham45's Lobster Army". Such demands include >9001 crates of peanuts, sacrificial blue lobsters, and a wide assortment of cherry flavored items. With such computing power stored in the hands of such people, we can only hope these demands are met.
In the wake of these events, we can only ask, Why? Why do these people make these demands, what caused them to gather, and what are their future plans...

Juju actually according to my bro power went down during about an hour and half, starting around 7:30 PM if I remember. At work we didn't lose any but water started leaking in the generator room from a door that leads on the store roof, the aisle 8 and I saw some somewhere else in the backstore.
Juju I hope you get power soon.
As for the storm, they say it could have been much worse if it didn't make landfall in NC.
