topic about yesterday
« on: March 09, 2011, 03:31:27 am »
I didn't know what to call this topic so I just named it 'topic about yesterday'.

First of all I wanna say thank you to DJ_O for unbanning me so early.
What happened yesterday was that I got a little upset because I saw that SirCmpwn had posted a link to something about pron. Because looking at pron is against my belief I mentioned the bible. But if you are not a christian what would that help? But I only realized a bit later thay you don't need the bible to show that pron is bad.
I want to mention that when I said I don't like you it wasn't just for saying 'lul, the bible', it was because he posted the pron. But as a christian not liking isn't a sin, it isn't hating. When you love someone, you care for that person. If I wouldn't care I wouldn't have mentioned anything.
But I shouldn't have said it though because it is many times seen as hate. I actually should have said: I dont like that you post pron.
Because I might like SirCmpwn in everythong else he does.
If I mocked, or offended his beliefs I am sorry.

And now when I see those chatlogs, it looks like I'm really rude.
But this wasn't my intention, so I'm sorry.
Whoever else I might have offended, please forgive me.

I'm sure that DJ_O and the other admins will take care of these problems, and that I don't have to interfear.
I'm not upset on DJ_O for banning me, because I was going probably a bit too far.

So thank you again for unbanning me so early, DJ. I will try to not let this happen again.

Yeah I think that was the misunderstanding. In english, I don't like you means you dislike the person, which implies you have a problem with the person, rather than what he does/did.

However, I would like if religious stuff remained outside Omnimaga. If at 1-3 AM GMT-5 someone posts a slightly NSFW video (not porn, but some minimal nudity, like a trailer for a teen comedy movie), I don't want you to complain about it using the religion excuse. Same goes for that person who complained that someone used "oh my god" as expression or that guy who ranted that we used a Christmas theme in December 2007 with the excuse that he's atheist. You're free to believe or not believe in what you want, but there will be no reasonable accomodation on the forums, be it a special rule or exemption.

If I want to use "OMG", I will. If someone wants to post a video that is rated 13+ with some suggestive scenes (but not enough to be adult-rated/considered as porn) or a gory Left 4 Dead 2 video, he will. There's no religion that will stop anyone from doing certain things that would otherwise be within the board rules. In other words, if you call people out for posting something based on your religious beliefs, that would be backseat-moderating, which isn't tolerated when the person enforces rules that don't exist. The only thing that could change something is if the majority objects against a certain form of content (unless the majority wanted me to allow trolling x.x). The video posted in the chan by SIr, however, was against the rules, because it was blatant adult material.

Anyway, no hard feelings. Just remember that Omnimaga rules offer no exemption based on religions, age, etc.

Ok, I understand. I didn't click on the link that he gave, but the name said enough.

Yeah, as a rule of thumb, if someone posts a link to something (or a thread in the randomness section) and he says "NSFW" and you suspect it might be stuff you do not want to see, then it's best to not open them. Of course, as moderator, however, we kinda have no choice, though, to make sure people stay within the rules. X.x

That said, remember we started being stricter on rule enforcment in the past few days in response to the abuse that occured for 2 weeks at one point. Otherwise if a ban even occured it would have lasted 10 minutes.

Okay, at least it's resolved quickly. Just as a rule of thumb, don't get into religious debates with people on the internet.  It never ends up well.  I'm a Christian too, so it's not like I don't want to hear your opinion.  But there are certain ways to do things that still show the love of Christ.  Now then, off my little pedestal and... yeah. How do I end a post like this?

....

Meh.

I've been wondering this for a while and I know no way to find it out without debates. what religion are people here. i was thinking we might be able to do a poll just to see. We'd have to lock the thread to prevent religious arguments though...
This has just been an idea I had for a while and wanted to see if someone could implement

i rather enjoy discussing/debating that sort of thing every now and then. however, they tend to cause some people to get angry and generally result in drama, so keeping it outside of omnimaga entirely seems like the best way to go.

Yeah personally I don't mind debates and stuff on the forums, although I recommend avoiding controversial ones if possible, since they tend into people joining and generalizing, offending other people.

Religion is one hard topic to discuss, because from a country to another it's different, even if it's the same religion. In USA, there are areas that are very religious, while over here, for example, churches are shutting their door due to lack of people coming. (Although the duplessis orphan incident coming out in public didn't help the latter)

personally, i dont care if people know what faith i am, and i dont mind discussions on religion, but i think they need to be very heavily watched because as some have said, they do make people angry.

I believe we have been able to hold conversations on religion before, and it was quite civil. I don't remember what thread it was though...

Late last night, Quebec was invaded by a group calling themselves, "Omnimaga". Not much is known about these mysterious people except that they all carried calculators of some kind and they all seemed to converge on one house in particular. Experts estimate that the combined power of their fabled calculators is greater than all the worlds super computers put together. The group seems to be holding out in the home of a certain DJ_O, who the Omnimagians claim to be their founder. Such power has put the world at a standstill with everyone waiting to see what the Omnimagians will do...

Wait... This just in, the Omnimagians have sent the UN a list of demands that must be met or else the world will be "submitted to the wrath of Netham45's Lobster Army". Such demands include >9001 crates of peanuts, sacrificial blue lobsters, and a wide assortment of cherry flavored items. With such computing power stored in the hands of such people, we can only hope these demands are met.

In the wake of these events, we can only ask, Why? Why do these people make these demands, what caused them to gather, and what are their future plans...

Religion has absolutely nothing to do with Omnimaga and should be completely and in every way left out of here. And that means no special privileges for anyone. I've been enough on the Internet to know any "discussion" or "debate" on religion eventually turns into a massive shitfest (my yesterday's flamebait quote was there to release the Kraken and end the vicious circle of retarded arguments and one-way thinking; it thankfully got locked quickly). It's like the YouTube comment section all over again when it comes to religion and the Internet. If something does not fit with one's beliefs on Omnimaga or any other nonreligious place, then he or she must turn away or leave.

Religion shouldn't be remotely a focus on omnimaga, and omnimaga itself must remain neutral.

I would think, however, that if members do want to discuss it because they may be curious or whatnot, then they could. However such conversations would have to be closely watched. Or at least that's my own opinion, I don't care either way personally. :P

Discussion and small scale debates, I personally see as permissible (though not encouraged) but one way thinking, forcing opinions as others, and general closed mindedness would not be tolerated.

Though, again, that's just the ideal I see. I hope that this community can be mature enough to handle such discussions in the future, although at this time it might not be.
