My contract ends March, and I'm hoping to get an Android phone. My parents don't have any problem paying for the phone, but since they all require data plans, they don't want to pay like $70 a month for that. So my choices are to buy an unlocked (really expensive up front) or to switch to a cheaper network (I'm currently on AT&T)

Are you wondering who Sammy is? My avatar is Sammy.

Verizon offered us 22% off of our bill a month (because of the hospital thing) which was awesome. My data plan is 2GB which is a necessary for smartphones on Verizon, but it's way more than enough, seeing as I'm only going to use it on the bus because I have WiFi at home. From going downtown and checking my email there, I've only used 0.0146GB so far lol. AT&T is $25 a month extra for a 4G smartphone with 2GB of data, which isn't bad at all. If we went with AT&T, I would'be gotten some other HTC phone because they're pretty solid builds.

Oh wow... I pressed back then next again and it let me install it... Thanks ephan! And thanks again for the congrats lol

Yeah I knew there was something like that :D And be warned, the time I used the Android SDK on Windows, the emulator was so slow, I hope it's not like that for you.

I do not have a cellphone, but if I was to get one, it might be android. After all, I already have an iPod Touch. Not sure if I want a cellphone yet, though, because I do not call/receive calls often and the plans are still quite expensive, although being able to go online from elsewhere is definively cool, especially if I got a 1 hour bus ride. :P

It's quite surprising that in the modern society someone like you doesn't have a cell phone, but I guess that if you don't need it, it's ok. But can't you go to the Internet on the iPod Touch?

Darn... Oh well, I'll just have to make sure it works before I waste my time and try to debug lol.

@DJ, I plan to only have a cell phone when I go to college/get my own house. I see no need for a cell and home phone. Plus, nowadays you can use you phone as a WiFi hotspot.

Yeah I already have an home phone line, which I split the cost of with my bro. If I get a cellphone, I'll still need my home line, since my bro uses it.

It's just so friggin expensive, like $40 a month for cheapest plans here. Add this to the rent, the internet bill, power bill, etc, that's quite a big chunk of money.

Also iPod Touch won't go online unless you're near a wi-fi connection. For example, if I'm in the bus, I only get internet access during about 1 minute near the Laval Univesity.

Yeah over here they had wifi in the first two 2010 vehicles they had, but it was only a trial of a possible future service, which lasted 2 months but then got extended for another month. I hope they bring it back. I think in Quebec city they don't even have Wi-Fi in buses either.

Um... Isn't public, unsecured WiFi a bad thing to use?

If you login on sites, yes, but if you be careful and logout I guess it can be fine. After all, I personally would only use it on my iPod or something anyway.

Or you could do what I did - I took my 3G hotspot with me on a trip and used the secured wi-fi from it :D

old skool nokia FTW (with broken screen :P)
you can't break those phones :P
My parents have one of those, circa like 2003 or something. The only problem is it now takes an unreasonable amount of force on the zero button for it to register so she's getting a new one. We also have another nokia that has a monochrome screen but we dont use it.

Also, my preferred carrier would be T-Mobile (which my parents use, so there is probably a family bundle or something) or Sprint, because of the fact they are smaller and have to be more competitive.

T-Mobile was actually my first though, but their service map didn't look too promising where I live. We've had Sprint before, and we had terrible service with them. We didn't want to go with a prepaid because we had Tracfone and it got annoying with the minutes. So that left AT&T and Verizon. My best friend has had both (he's currently with AT&T) and he said Verizon was best, so that's what we went with.

Got a Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY since previous month (:
Running on latest Android (2.3.3 or smth) My first Android phone :D

My previous phone was an HTC Snap, running on Windows Mobile 6.1 I think, nothing special about that one.
The one before that was a Sony Ericsson W810i with whatever the standard SE OS was back then, it was a nifty littly phone back then, good to play Java games (how many hours I used to spend on playing games with that 5 button 'joystick' and a screen of 178*220 xD ) even the 'heavier' ones in 3D (:
