Aah i was just about to post an update on it. Well Im very very proud to say that i created it from scratch!!! First i downloaded 'visitor font' from abstractfonts.com which is the official userbars font, then i just left my old version on my sig there for a while. yester and today i began creating my new one! i am glad you all like it very much! I really did make it from scratch! here's some more details:

i went to this website userbars.com
even though i couldn't get to the designer i found this page:
http://designer.userbars.com/overview.php
really helpful as it showed all the layers. immediately i thought of a plan, i remember seeing a tut on how to make userbars in photoshop, when i opened it up and tried, i got as far as setting the canvas to 350 x 19 px. i couldn't even choose the colour of the gradient for my background!

so i went to the trusty Paint.NET. Now i realise that it has many good features that are in photoshop too but in paint.net it's much simpler to use!!! started with 1 layer the gradient, added a bluespot layer - it's hardly visible because most of it's hidden by the logo, then i wondered how to get a cross line diagonal pattern layer. i managed by getting a grey colour and setting the alpha to around 112, wow it worked perfectly. The text took a little fidgeting, so i got larger text and made it black but with a grey brick (or was it 80% black?) pattern (it's a bit hard to see, so it's easy to read not like most userbars with tiny text. The gloss then was quite hard. you had to draw an ellipse that was equal on both sides and made a nice curve. i was surprised that i managed to get it so well, it may not be exact (if there is a standardised size for the gloss) but looks professional. i eventually settled for grey with 112 alpha, but wait! it was too dark! it was white, with 90 alpha that did the trick. it may not be exact but close enough. Finally the logo which went underneath the text and gloss layers. it was a big 256x256 icon and all i did was position it and re-set the canvas size to 350 x 19. Walala!!!! Job done magnifique! (sorry for the broken use of European languages! lol!) And now i have a big BIG smile on my face because i'm glad you all say it's great! the previous one was from a website with an automated creator and had dodgy text. So there's a short guide to how i made it and proof in the screenshot! maybe i should write a more detailed tutorial for people who need it.

Remember created all with Paint.NET! (except for the logo which was created in PowerPoint) actually powerpoint is great for creating icons. but not when it comes to userbars since they have to be a specific ratio of 350 x 19.

Enjoy everyone!

Cool :D. I like to do stuff myself, although it's hard sometimes.

By the way there's also http://userbars.removedfromgame.com , which requires an account but is by a member of Omnimaga who used to be admin.

ooh that website http://userbars.removedfromgame.com/ says it is 350 x 20 px. Hmmmm

found this website which has a debate about this.

Ah ok. I guess it's up to you. I personally like {AP}'s userbar site because it's not as slow as when we upload userbars on imageshack.

Okay, I've been trying to make an 84 + userbar...

Is there any way to get rid of the white border around the pic?

Around the TI-84? sure, just create it as an alpha channel, and export it to something like .tiff or .png, and then add it to the userbar.  The black from the user bar should show through.

Related topic: I still don't really understand how alpha channels work. Does anyone have a link to a tutorial on it?

EDIT: Ninja'd.

EDIT2: Darl181, I think you'd need a better editor.

An alpha channel is a "see-though" channel.  Think of it this way.  In your computer, you have RGB, which is Red, Green, and blue "channels".  Now, if you add a 4th, called Alpha, or RGBA, then you have an extra channel.  Hence, alpha channel.

Now what Alpha channel does is pretty interesting.  When rendering the picture, if the editor supports it (MS Paint does not), it well set the color of the pixel in question.  The alpha channel for that pixel says that the background should show through the pixels.  Depending on the value of the Alpha channel (just like RGB channels have different values) is how much it shows through.  So with the alpha channel for a pixel fully on, you would see the background behind the picture.
