Title: Favorite Music
Post by: Joshuasm32 on April 27, 2013, 12:30:51 pm
What are your favorite genre(s), song(s), album(s), or artist(s)?  Post them with a link!   :)

Although my favorite genre is always changing, I like the artists Coldplay, Radiohead, Snow Patrol, and U2 pretty well!   ;D  I would post certain songs, but thee are too many for me to link too...

I don't have any "favorite artist". That is discrimination to think that because some band made one music, all of their music is good. And the contrary is true too, it is stupid to think that some artist is bad because we heard their worst song but not the others. And those sentences stay true if you replace "artist" with "genre", so I don't understand why people often listen to one only genre of music, saying other genres are crap.

To answer to the topic, my favorite music is Sun of Pearl (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KzwUVwsch8) by An Endless Sporadic.

Is it wrong to say your favorite  genre?  I am not saying all other genres are bad, just that I prefer a certain genre.

Well that still means that when you hear a music for the first time, you have an idea of if you'd like it a bit or a lot, even before you heard it. And that if I give you two musics, you'll choose to listen the one of the genre you prefer before the other, or something.
I don't say it is bad, it is not as bad as saying "all other genres are crap", but I still prefer not having prejudices on something I don't know :)

I think that favorite genre changes with mood.  (i.e., If you are in a happy mood, would you listen to a funeral song?)

I personally don't have a specific style of genre that I only listen to, but I do like 80's-90's music a lot.
My favorite music for now still is:
-The Rasmus
-Keane
-Leeland
-Rick Astley(serious)
...

My taste in music changes. If I listen to one song a lot, I get tired of it faster. This is why I like Pandora because you aren't choosing what you'll listen to.
Anyway, I am in LOVE with Chris Brown's Fine China, it's a lot like JT's Suit and Tie. I also like Hurry (Lovin' is Crazy) by Surrender!.
My favorite artist is probably Maroon 5; This Love is and She Will Be Loved are both good songs. I also like The Glitch Mob with Forune Days and We Can Make the World Stop.
My favorite genre... I like a lot of stuff. There are some classical peices I like, and my Foster the People radio on Pandora and my Maroon 5 radios are pretty dang different.

I like a lot of music from 1970-1990.
And then I like a lot of piano music from before then.
Chopin, Beethoven, and Rachmaninoff are my favorites.
Dapianokid recently introduced me to Rachmaninoff. I'm learning how to play this one now.

Queen
The Beatles (+other british invasion artists)
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
Survivor
Thin Lizzy
Johnny Cash
Chuck Berry

as well as a few things like:
Coeur de Pirate and
They might be giants.

It's hard to tell by genre because there are many sub-genre. For example I can't say I like electronic music as a whole since I only like a few sub-genres of electronic music.

Lately I've been a lot into Iron Maiden and Sabaton, though, especially Seventh Son of a Seventh Son album. Besides that, I usually listen to Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, Metallica, Armageddon (who are apparently coming back after a 14 years absence), Gamma Ray, Overkill and many others. Sometimes I also listen to black/death metal, but for any music genre I tend to prefer the melodic stuff. I also like 16 and 32 bit-like metal (SNES, Sega Genesis, MODplug tracker, Music Generator, etc) such as Albion

Besides heavy/power metal, I like most eurodance and happy hardcore from 1994 to 2005 and a lot of trance from 1999 to 2003. For newer electronic stuff I prefer independent artists stuff, since it tends to be more original and less commercial. I also like italo disco (the kind that is more hi-NRG and faster like eurobeat)

Of course, outside those genres, Pink Floyd are some of my favorite. I also like Alice Cooper, but mostly the stuff from the late 80's. I don't listen much to Coeur de Pirate but I like some of her songs such as Golden Baby.

Like said above, my music interest changes over the time, though. There were times where I mostly listened to dance music, then switched to power metal, before switching back to dance, but lately I have been less and less interested in dance music since most new stuff that come out is crap.

Kind of different I guess :P
Genres are all over the place, varies from day to day.

Don't really listen to big artists/bands/etc too much, except for radio in the car or something.

I've always been fond on 8-bit and chiptune songs. It's frustrating though, because there aren't many artists actively making chiptune songs anymore. It's mostly just old soundtracks from 80's-90's games.

Alas, here are some of my favorite songs:

And some non-chiptune ones:

I also like EDM and a bit more specifically, Dubstep:

Well, my tastes are pretty varied, here's a small sample:

Spoiler For This post's gonna be long.:
Metal, like Metallica and Iron Maiden...

Eurobeat (also ponies!)

Folk metal like Eluveitie and such

Japanese music (like Hatsune Miku and anime OST)

Video game OST, especially japanese games such as Touhou and Final Fantasy (also maybe some trance music)

Power metal such as DJ Omnimaga's, he's real good I have to list him twice.

Have you heard 8-Bit Cosmos? It's one of the few 8-bit songs that I like.

Recently, I've really gotten into a band called Coheed & Cambria. What really interests me about them is that, all of their albums are part of one connecting storyline (although the last three albums have been prequels). I like concept albums as a whole, so a concept discography grabs my attention even more (see also Ayreon). Not to mention, there's even comic books of the storylines.

Some of my favourite tracks from them:

O_O  That is pretty cool- music with a storyline?  Is it still music or a musical?

I would say "music that tells a story". It would take way more than one listen to truly get a grasp of what's going on (unlike say, Dream Theater's Metropolis pt 2, or any of Ayreon).. I still have a little trouble figuring out which song tells what chapter. :P

I suppose so.  In all reality, all music tells a story, either of an experience, an event, or an emotion.   ;)  The only difference is that these songs continue a story instead of having it end in one song.

Idea: Someone should make a website/ forum so people can tell what stories they think are behind music. It'd be cool to see everyone's ideas...

I'm sure there is one already... This is the Internet.
I've found some sites already that find the meaning of the lyrics of many songs... although many are filled with people acting smart. :\

IIRC, most of Voivod's discography until 2005 is the story of a post-apocalyptic knight called Voivod.

We should totally create a thread for that.

That would be pretty awesome, especially for the music I like...  Like Radiohead, most of their words you cannot understand.

Yeaahhh FoD rules. Btw there is probably more chipmusic being composed today then ever. Check out this site (http://www.chipmusic.org/), or some (http://www.kittenrock.co.uk/) of (http://www.iimusic.net/) these (http://ubiktune.com/) excellent (http://www.coucounetlabel.com/) netlabels (http://www.chippanze.org/).

Btw I'm making chipmusic (https://soundcloud.com/irrlicht-project), too ;)

@Not a Number: You should check out Rhapsody of Fire if you like fantasy stuff. Their musical albums tell a continuous story as well.

Indeed, they're a great power metal band too. However I think their 2002-present stuff isn't as great as their past stuff. Too slow or not melodic enough. Another nice artist is Peter Crowley Fantasy Dream, who is a solo artist, but I think he recently wrote a story for a music album.

You know how I said my taste in music changes? I found a new band that I like: Bag Raiders. An alternative group, mixed with a little bit of pop, synth, and maybe even some disco. Sunlight and Gone Away are my favorites of their songs.
I never expected one of my ideas on a forum to get popular! I think a thread would be a great idea.

If he's dubstep probably not. Not really a fan of the genre. However, I'm sure others are, so you should post some links. :D

*Edit* Looks like he does 8bit stuff. Cool. :D

That reminds me, in Late Sept I'm going to an Helloween concert. I really hope that my other favorite bands starts touring again soon, though, and not just only visiting Montreal and not Quebec like some did this year. Some I really want to see live are Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica (although nowadays they sometimes mostly play their slower stuff D:), Dragonforce (I skipped the 2011 concert because I watched the infamous Wacken 2009 performance and was worried, but I heard they got much better live and it was because at Wacken they were too drunk), Gamma Ray, Metallica, Iron Maiden and Over Kill. There are others as well that I might have forgotten.

Yea, I wouldn't mind seeing some of those guys myself, Stratovarius, Dragonforce, and Iron Maiden in particular. :) My last concert was Rush, and they were freakin great live. ;D

Yeah I saw them too last Summer. It was really good. Since late 2012 so far I actually saw Bad Religion, Weezer, Wintersun, Varg, Eluveitie, Rush, Def Leppard, Guns N Roses, Dance Laury Dance (twice) and Steel Panthers. Most were great, although there were a few things that happened that I didn,t like as much at some of the shows:

-Guns N Roses: 30 minutes into the show, they were only playing songs that most people didn't know. However, as compromise they played during almost 3 hours and reserved most hits for the 2nd part so in overall it was great.
-Steel Panthers: They only played about two of their faster songs and there was a lot of talk, although it was funny and most songs were good. That said, it was still a fun night anyway plus I was actually coming mostly for DLD who were playing before them.
-Weezer: People kept trying to walk through the crowd everywhere, but without being careful, so if you had a drink, it could be spilled on the ground at any moment. But even when they were careful, it was still abusive how much they kept moving around. The show was kinda good, though, but the people were just too annoying and distracting since we always had to let them pass.
-Def Leppard: I felt kinda sick and had extreme back and neck pain for some unknown reasons (that happens sometimes). I almost left earlier because of that. They were really good though!

Overall, though, it was fun!

Actually although I generally dislike rap, I find that one not too bad lol. Probably because there is an actual melody in it, though, as well as electric guitar :P

(Btw people, NSFW lyrics up there, in case you are browsing the internet in a SFW-only area :P)
