I'm going to sing an opera!!!
« on: March 17, 2010, 10:20:03 am »
Hey guys,

'Bout a month ago I auditioned for L'Orfeo (Claudio Monteverdi; the piece is widely regarded as the first real opera, it was written around 1600), in Antwerp. Finally got the feedback: I MADE IT!! Jabadabadoo!
I'll be one of the ensemble singers: tenor for me.

By the way, the theater house organizing the production is actually one of the more 'famous' ones (in Belgium): check transparant.be

Necrof-_-ckk says he lives in Ninove, which is close to Brussels IIRC, and can't be more than 50 km from where I live (Mechelen). The performances will be in Antwerp ('bout 25 km from Mechelen) and Bruges. (Shadow could reach Bruges in an acceptable amount of time :P )

Anyway, thanks for the congratulations.

Aaaah I see. It would be fun if one day there was some calc convention/meeting in Belgium or the like. Back in 2005 some MaxCoderz members met in the Netherlands. 3 lived close and the other was on a world trip. I personally met AaroneusTheGreat in person during his french class summer trip in Montreal, while he did a small trip to Quebec City, and I think Super_Speler and Magicdawn both goes at the same school.

Anyway good luck with your opera!

Belgium? Het gat van de wereld? I'd be great if I still lived to see a calc convention there... :D
I guess it would be real fun. (I know some people in the Netherlands calc community, but even there we couldn't agree on a location. The two admins wanted Groningen, but for most of the others (and all Belgians) it was really far, since it's all up north)

I know, distances are relative. You Americans/Russians/Canadians/... probably don't care about a few hundred miles, but if you grow up in a country as small as Belgium, well.. :P

Yeah.  My family would go on 8 hour one way (16 hour round trip) weekend trips through 3 states, by leaving on Friday and coming back on Sunday. :)

Is 8 hours really far for Europeans?

I think the thing is that in Europe, countries are so small compared to North American ones, and because of borders and passport annoyances, people are less used to travel far.

I personally never travelled far, though. The farthest I went to is 250 Km away, in Montreal area, to La Ronde

Yeah that's pretty far for them. My dad went to visit relatives in the Netherlands when he was younger and he went to the capital city for the day and they thought he was crazy because of how "far away" it was. I'm not going to say how far I've had to travel by car x.x

The borders in Europe are open since the foundation of the EU, which is about 50 to 60 years ago, so that shouldn't be a problem. It is true that countries are so small, and certainly so compact, that you hardly need to travel far to 'fulfill your needs', so to speak. By the way, Belgium has some nature too. (Ardennen, if you care)

Last scouting trip we went to the Luxembourg province (which borders on the country bearing the same name), and came over one day after the start of the weekend. We (that's me and a girl who also came over later) were really astonished how 'long' it took: 3h. In a country as small as Belgium, that IS far :P
