We all know what jazz is, right?

That music characterized by swing (sometimes) and lots of sevenths

Discuss your experiences with jazz here (favorite tunes, if you've been in jazz band, etc)

Why? I feel as if jazz is a lost genre of music, there is only 1 jazz station in Atlanta anymore, and most of the songs it plays are from the 70s and before.
I am Bach.

I think jazz is a pretty nice genre. It's tough to learn, but once you know it, it's awesome (though I never bothered to learn it :P) I like the jazz songs of Stevie Wonder much.

Not much into jazz myself, but that is cool :D (although this seems like a different song claiming to be a cover of metallica, because parts seems to be missing)

As of next schoolyear, I'll be in the Jazz Ensemble.
I passed my audition, despite being embarrassingly terrible at everything improv-related :P

I do really like jazz but I'm not really that familiar with the genre. I tend to like the stuff that is really upbeat and wanders a lot, IE, bebop, or variants and the more progressive sounding stuff. I don't care for the slow stuff, or most of the big band stuff.

to be more specific, i'm more into bebop and gypsy swing than anything else. the more complex, impromptu instrumentals the better =D

how little attention these things get today is sad. a couple of modern projects i've gotten excited about and that might interest other people, though, are Caravan Palace (an "electroswing" group that actually puts more emphasis on the "swing" part than the "electro", using the synths etcetera as just another instrument in the ensemble, which i haven't seen anybody else do to date), and Sakamichi no Apollon, a recent anime from Yokko Kano, Shinichiro Watanabe, et al. with fun remixes of classics accompanied with LOTS AND LOTS of beautifully animated playing of instruments.

Cool. Bebop's fun to dance to, but a bit too square for my liking when I just listen to it. I like stuff that get complex really quickly and is more improv-based. I tend to like combo-type jazz (Herbie Hancock, Thelonious Monk, etc.), as well as some fusion. In terms of written jazz, I am a fan of changing time signatures, and pieces that keep you guessing, but still have a recognizable motif.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I learned the origins of bebop in jazz band last year. At the time of bebop's invention (WWI era, I think), jazz was pretty much the devil's music in the military's eyes (too complex, plus the atmosphere of the places it is normally played was not to the military's liking), so a jazz band (forget which one) made more square, dance-type, and upbeat jazz, called bebop. They then tried to get contracts with the military to become official entertainment for soldiers in camps and such. The only one of their songs I remember is "Little Brown Jug," which we played in jazz band, and was discussed because we were playing it.

So, I actually just saw this topic :I

In any case, I was in a jazz band 'bout 3-4ish years back. This, of course, was before I moved back to germany. The climate for jazz back there is just sad(besides my neighbour. But he's an american. He doesn't count.)

We played some fun stuff as well, but bearing in mind this was middle school, obviously not overly advanced.

This piece was a lot of fun, though(Eh, please excuse the video quality, I couldn't find any good recordings out there. Really a shame :-\
