Lol at thieves
« on: March 20, 2010, 12:37:47 am »
http://absolix.newgrounds.com/

Not sure how long this is gonna last but according to Iambian this one was even in the top 50 x.x

Well he was reported. In case this link goes down soon, this guy uploaded many of my songs as well as some by Nitacku from Omnimaga website without my permission.

Thanks to Iambian for reporting this.

I suspect DJ Trancite, who tried doing the same thing a few months ago (if anyone remember some discussion in #omnimaga), and I wouldn't be surprised if he had more accounts. He most likely wanted to have revenues from clicks, something I failed to achieve so far (but again I only have 5 songs on NG x.x)

I was going to say - it looks like he's just trying to mirror your music downloads for other people to find; but one his responses to the comments makes it seem like he's trying to claim credit for the track:

Thanks lol
I try to get as many people as i can to view my songs.. so yea
They don't normally get let down

I will never understand why anyone bothers to blatantly plagiarize others. Do these people actually feel accomplished when they assume credit for someone else's work? :P

yeah I checked all the tracks and he claims he did most of them. It seems typical on Newgrounds, though, which is why I never listen to music there anymore. The saddest thing is that they rip music from other websites, not newgrounds user so there's no way to stop them easily.

If SMF didn't have the post-count glitch, I would make the music section of this site (and TIMGUL's) so you need 10 posts to download anything there. It would be easier to check which member comes for music theft and others for other stuff.

Also it kinda sucks now because this thief has like 100x more views than my own Newgrounds account x.x

I think it's possible to define read-only tags in most media files. With that, you could include details like your site URL, and add a comment like, "This file may only be hosted at {site URL}" If the files get circulated beyond Omnimaga, that would at least let your fans know to watch out for unauthorized copies; though I guess that doesn't do much good if someone uploads it to a Flash container, (i.e., YouTube or Newgrounds media players) where metadata is stripped during the transcoding process.

I would think Newgrounds would do something about the user, if you report the account for fraudulent use of your name and your works. :-\

Well I reported it to a Newgrounds moderator I got on my buddy list on AIM, who told me he will report him to admins with more powers, but it has been 4 days and the user account is still intact. Maybe the admins think I AM the thief x.x. I know the mod don't, though, since he's the one who discovered about DJ Trancite trying to steal my stuff last summer, and even joined #omnimaga IRC to alert me of it.

I would give them a little more time to investigate it. They probably want to search for connections to your name and your works so they can verify your claims before taking action. If you can get in contact with the admins directly, (maybe the site has a "Contact Us" link somewhere) you can give them more detailed info: Your website URL, where your files are hosted, etc. Suggest they check the upload / modification dates on your copies of the files, and compare them to that of this user. Metadata is probably the most useful method of verifying the origin of a file; though even that can be manipulated...

Personally, plagiarism doesn't bother me so much. I make it a habit to release any of my works under a license allowing others to redistribute or modify the work. As long as people are able to enjoy my work in some shape, form or fashion, then I'm satisfied to have contributed something that will have influenced, entertained and / or inspired them - my reputation notwithstanding; though, I can understand how a reputation might be important to someone who wants to create an active fanbase, and reach out to many people at once. It guess it would be difficult to maintain a certain kind of profile when other people are usurping your aliases and passing your works off as their own.

You know, I don't think I have any kind of online reputation... I'm more of a "hit-and-run" kind of guy when it comes to my Internet activity.

Also I think this user has many accounts, they may be trying to find them all first, or figure out a way so he won't come back. If the new thief is DJ Trancite again, then it's the 10th time or so he ban evades (IP/accounts).

As for plagerism, I personally don't mind as long as the thief wont cause me to get accused of stealing his work I didn't stole. I would hate that. This is why for calc games I recommend never giving away public demos without posting it on ticalc first. That way if someone steals it and post it on ticalc, the staff will have proof.

Also on NG I only have five of my songs, while the thief has 20 of them, so that's a big issue x.x.

Have you a licence for your music? Even with that, that thief violates the most permissive ones, such as Creative Commons...

nah I don't. I should maybe check more into that stuff, but then it won't stop people from stealing the music, since so many are doing so alerady
