Music Composing Software?
«
on:

I'm looking for (free) music-composing software (that doesn't require a microphone or recording, but, if possible, have it as an option). I'd what something that supports (at least):violin, piano, guitar, and drums. I'd prefer if it could save as one or more of the following formats: MP3, MIDI, WAVE. Does anybody know of anything that meets these specifications?

Yeah but good luck finding it, you'll need to find torrents of it and with 6 seeders it will take around 2 days to download if you succeed

Acid Pro, Logic, Cubase, FL Studio just to name a few. Logic might be difficult to download though.
The rest can be obtained from either 'demos' or as updates.
Just use a key generator to register the product and you have a fully functional music creation program.
Personally I use Acid Pro because it's the easiest to figure out how to use.
FL Studio is basically all eye candy, but it does have some cool features, that is if you can figure out how to use them.
(I couldn't figure out how to get the darn thing to even play
)
Cubase is another difficult one to figure out.
Logic I am unsure about as I have never used it. But apparently it is one of the best.
Native Instruments makes some nice programs such as Traktor, Reaktor, and Kompact, but I think you still need a 'main program' in order to fully use those tools.
Oh I almost forgot, Guitar Pro can be useful at times. I find that the visual music note editor is convenient especially when trying to get those drum and bass beats to midi.
Of course there are countless others such as Garage Band and Finale, but I'm trying to save you some time by naming the best. At least from my experience.
Here's the link to
http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/download/step2.asp?DID=662
.
Now just Google a key generator. (I'd get in trouble if I showed you where to find one.)

OK, thanks everybody.
Oh, and I forgot to ask - do any of these work on Linux? It's OK if they don't but I'd really prefer to work on my Linux computer.

i dont know, I only tried fl and it was for windows, same for MTV
MTV music is very easy to use, but if you messed a lot with FL studio you may say it sucks. I don't think it does that much though because I managed to make all the songs here
http://omnimaga.unitedti.org/music/
with it, and on top of that I used the playstation version which didn't let me import my own samples since i used an emu

Sweet! Are those all in midi?
There's some pretty complicated music going on there.
Dark side of the moon is Awesome! :king:
http://www.2shared.com/file/2292686/73917670/beatz.html
that I've been working on lately. It starts after about 5 seconds, so just be patient.
I'm using Acid Pro and Sytrus (a vsti plugin)
Just letting you know I'm still working on it, so that's why it will stop so abruptly

Thanks nitacku. THey are all mp3 formats. I like your song so far. In next version you should add some synths, preferably like those in Chaos Inside Me that start at 41 seconds, prbly slightly harder though. But nice job so far
when finished let me know so I can add it to archives with the other ones
EDIT: Also make the hi hats louder
as well as the blipping/acid effect

nitacku: Acid Pro looks awesome, but the only free version is a trial. Fl Studio, Cubase, Native Instruments' software, MTV Music Generator, and Guitar Pro all seem to not be completely free, and Logic Studio is not only not free, but it seems to be Mac-only (I only have Linux and Windows). Is there anything good that is free (and that isn't just a trial version or a demo), or would I have to pay to get good music-composing software?

Did you use a Keygen to register the product?
I can provide a link to one if you like. (i just don't want to get in trouble)
Fl Studio can be downloaded using Ares. (that's how I got it.)
If you register the product correctly using a Keygen, you will have the real thing.
Just to clarify, none of these products are meant to be free, but with a Keygen they can be free.

Not in public like on a forum or IRC channel. We can't do anything if you do it privately though

K. It's a good thing I didn't post a link then
(I wasn't going to anyway because the site has a tenancy to display some not so appropriate adds without an addblocker installed)

OpenMPT. (
http://openmpt.xwiki.com/xwiki/bin/view/Main/WebHome
)
Best tracker-based music composition software I've ever used.
It is really easy once you get used to it and you can write a whole song in just about 30 minutes.
You can also use WAVE and SoundFont II-format instrument sets which you can find at places like HammerSound and there's some fairly large instrument sets at
http://www.personalcopy.com/sfarkfonts1.htm
.
It can read almost all tracker-based music formats and MIDI and export as all those and also Wave and MP3 formats.
Unfortunately it does not work on Linux yet, but on Linux there are two tracker-based music composition softwares by the names of SchismTracker and CheeseTracker, and are usually in the package repository (or are in a third-party multimedia repo).
